초록

로마 가톨릭교회의 동아시아 지역교회인 천주교(天主敎)는 동아시아 지역에서 일어난 교류의 결과물이다. 천주교의 탄생과 전개 과정에 대해서는 지금까지 수많은 선행연구가 있었지만, 로마 가톨릭교회 입장이냐 아니냐에 따라 아직도 많은 부분에서 연구자들의 인식차가 보인다. 박해(迫害)와 척사(斥邪)로 엇갈리는 정부 대(對) 천주교 가운데 어느 쪽을 부각시키느냐에 따라 그 책임 여부가 달라질 수 있기 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 오늘날 환황해권이라고 부르는 지역에서 일어난 천주교 교안(敎案)이 동아시아인과 천주교인 또는 천주교 세력의 교류 과정이었다는 점에 주목하고자 한다.
보유론적 서학과 그 파생물인 천주교는 유럽과 동아시아, 로마 가톨릭과 유교의 교류와 단절의 대표적인 산물이다. 특히 지식인 계층을 중심으로 전개된 수준 높은 문화교류의 결과물이다. 적어도 여기에 참여한 유럽과 동아시아 지식인들은 상호주의적 문화 태도를 표방했고, 그 결과 2차 바티칸 공의회에 이르러서야 공식적으로 허용되었던 천주 개념과 제사 문제에 대한 시대를 앞선 이해가 이루어졌다.
하지만 로마 가톨릭교회 내부의 선교 방침 혼란과 제국주의 열강에 대한 중국과 조선 정부의 배타적인 태도 때문에 이러한 교류는 단절되었다. 그리고 이미 이루어진 보유론적 서학, 그리고 중국과 조선의 천주교는 기층 민중으로 스며들었다. 이러한 상황에 선교 자유 이후의 개신교가 가세하면서, 청나라의 태평천국, 조선의 동학 등 이른바 기독교계에 직간접적으로 영향을 주고받은 신흥종교나 민족종교가 만들어지면서, 이들에 대한 지역주민의 교안이 발생했다. 이것은 한 세기 전 환황해권에서 상호주의적 태도로 시작했던 교류가 제국주의적 양상을 띠는 데 대한 민중의 반발로 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The Catholic Church in the East Asian region of the Roman Catholic Church is the result of exchanges between the people in the East Asian region and Jesuit missionaries, who lived in both the sides of the Yellow Sea. As for the creation and the development process of the Catholic Church, a good number of studies have been progressed so far, but there are still considerate differences in many parts according to they belong to the Roman Catholic Church or not. It was because it tried to emphasize the aspect of the government versus the Catholic Church which is mixed with persecution and the expulsion of wickedness and shift the responsibility. Different from that, this study attempts to focus on the people versus the Catholics or the Catholic group in pan-yellow sea area, which is mixed persecution versus the Anti-Christian Movement.
The Western learning and the Catholic Church made in pan-yellow sea area can be considered to be the representative result of the exchange and severance of Europe and East Asia, and those of the Roman Catholic Church and Confucianism. Undoubtedly, this started with focus on the intellectual class and was a result of a high level cultural exchange. At least, the intellectuals of Europe and East Asia participating here claimed to stand for a reciprocal cultural attitude ostensibly, and as a result, progressive understanding of the issues on the Lord and ancestral rites officially recognized and allowed by the Second Vatican Council was made.
However, due to the confusion of the directions of missionary work inside of the Roman Catholic Church and the exclusive attitude of China and Joseon toward powers of imperialism, these exchanges had to be severed. Besides, Western learning of accommodation of Christianity to Confucianism previously made and the Catholic Churches of China and Joseon had been expanded to the underlying people and deteriorated. Furthermore, as Protestantism was added after the liberty of missionary work, newly-risen religions or national religions such as TaePing Revolution of the Qing Dynasty and Donghak of the Joseon Dynasty and the Anti-Christian Movement had been made by local residents. This may be considered to be resistance to the fact that the exchanges, which were made one century ago in the pan-yellow sea area showed the aspect of imperialism.
