초록

본 연구의 목적은 19세기 말에서 20세기 초 ‘동아시아 번역장(飜譯場)’을 둘러싼 다양한 문제 가운데 ‘번역 경로’라는 텍스트의 외적 조건이 갖는 의미를 밝히는 데 있다.
한국을 종착점으로 하는 1900년대의 서양 지식은 대개 (1)<서양→일본어→중국어→한국어> 혹은 (2)<서양→일본어→한국어>의 두 가지 번역 경로로 유통되었다. 이 두 경로의 근본적 차이는 ‘중국어’를 경유하느냐에 있었다. 본고에서는근대 동아시아 3국이 공히 집중적으로 번역한 서구영웅전의 중역 양상에 착안하여 중국어를 경유한 (1)의 경우 첫째, 텍스트 선택의 폭은 제한되지만 그것이 강한 의미를 띠지 않을 만큼 텍스트 선별 작업의 효율성이 상승했다는 것, 둘째, 원본과의 내적 간극은 보다 커지고 한국인 번역자의 개입은 보다 축소되었다는 것을 논하였다. 한편, 중국어를 경유하지 않고 바로 일본어 저본을 사용한 (2)의 경우는 번역의 목적을 두 가지 부류로 나누어, ‘정치적 발화’를 원할 경우 전폭적인 가공을 직접 감내해야 했다는 것, 일반교양을 위한 ‘객관적 지식’을 원할 경우최적의 콘텐츠를 찾기 위한 별도의 노력이 필요했다고 분석하였다.
아울러 이상의 논의를 토대로, 비스마르크라는 구체적인 대상과 『조양보』라는한정된 조사 범위를 적용한 사례 연구를 진행하였다. 그 결과 (1)에 해당하는기사들은 비스마르크의 지혜와 행동력, 대인의 풍모 등을 강조한 반면, (2)에해당하는 기사들은 자국의 이익만을 관철하려 한 비스마르크의 태도와 그의 야욕이 낳은 파괴적 결과에 주목했다는 사실을 확인하였다. 그리고 이러한 이율배반적인 비스마르크의 형상이 하나의 매체 속에서 공존할 수 있었던 이유는, 과감한 실천을 통해 국난을 타개할 영웅을 갈구하면서도 한편으로는 약육강식의시대 자체도 비판해야 했던 당시의 복합적 난맥으로 보았다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the significance of ‘paths of translation,’ which were an external condition of texts, among various issues surrounding ‘the field of translation in East Asia’ from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
In the distribution of Western knowledge to the destination of Korea until 1910, paths of translation were largely divided into (1) <the West → Japanese → Chinese → Korean> and (2) <the West → Japanese → Korean>. The fundamental difference between these two paths was whether being translated via ‘Chinese’ or not. Paying attention to the aspect of the second-hand translation of Western hero stories translated by all of the three countries in East Asia, this paper argues that in the case of (1) via Chinese, first, although the range of choice was limited, the efficiency of text selection increased so much that it outshined the limited choice, and second, the internal difference from the original widened and Korean translators’ intervention was reduced. On the other hand, in the case of (2) that directly used Japanese scripts, not via Chinese, the objectives of translation were divided into two categories and were analyzed. And this paper argues that in case of desiring ‘political utterance,’ the manuscript had to undergo overall processing, and in case of desiring ‘objective knowledge,’ presumably, separate efforts were put into the process of looking for the best candidates that would permit literal translation.
On the basis of the above arguments, this paper carried out case study research, with the specific object of Bismarck and the limited investigation scope of Joyangbo. The results show that while articles falling under (1) emphasized Bismarck’s wisdom, power of execution, and air of magnanimity, articles falling under (2) paid attention to the attitude of Bismarck who tried to achieve only his own country’s interest and the destructive results arising from his ambition. And the reasons for the coexistence of such antinomic images of Bismarck’s within the same media can be found from the harsh reality and complex needs of Korea at that time when it longed for a hero to break through the reality through decisive action, but also had to criticize the age when the law of the jungle prevailed.
