In the absence of widespread, effective sex education at home or in schools, television and other media have arguably become the leading source of sex education around the global society today. This is a rather sad commentary, considering that the global media are arguably the most sexually suggestive and irresponsible in the world. The global media titillate their viewers overtly with countless jokes and innuendoes about all aspects of human sexuality. Advertisers are using sex to sell virtually everything from hotel rooms to shampoo. It is considered the media are probably a major force to be reckoned with in considering when teens begin having sex. What changes in the global media would give the global youth a healthier view of sex and sexuality? Readers of this article should keep in mind such a number of possibilities as follows: 1) Widespread advertising of birth control in mainstream media like TV, magazines, and radio 2) Greater responsibility and accountability of mainstream media for producing healthy and accurate messages about sex and sexuality 3) Better taste in advertising 4) Incorporating the principles of media education into existing sex education programs 5) More and better counteradvertising 6) Greater sensitivity of parents to the influence of the media on juvenility 7) More and better research
