초록

조선 궁궐의 정전正殿마다 어좌를 장엄한 당가唐家 구조물의 형태는 다르지 않으나 당가의 벽면을 장식한 일월오봉도 병풍의 형태는 조금씩 차이를 보인다. 창덕궁 인정전의 경우가 가장 독특한데, 당가의 벽면 상단에는 4첩의 오봉도 병풍이 올려 있고 하단은 네 마리의 동물 문양을 그린 사령도四靈圖 장식판이 설치되어 있다. 본 논고에서는 지금의 모습이 되기까지 창덕궁 인정전 당가의변천 이력에 대하여 의궤와 사진, 기록물 등을 통해 살펴보았다.
창덕궁 인정전 당가의 변형은 고종을 대신해 황제로 즉위한 순종(재위: 1907~1910년) 이 경운궁에서창덕궁으로 이어한 후, 1908년 있었던 대대적인 궁궐 수리공사 때 이루어졌다. 궁궐 안의 공사는궁내부 차관 고미야 미호마쓰小宮三保松, 1859~1935의 지휘 하에 이루어졌다. 인정전 당가는 지붕의 상부구조는 그대로 유지하되, 좌탑座榻을 들어내어 어좌의 높이를 낮췄다. 그리고 당가 벽면의 구조를 일본식 창호 구조로 바꾸고, 앞면을 장식했던 일월오봉도를 대신해, 일본 천황의 어좌를 장식하던 봉황과 서수 문양의 그림으로 화려하게 꾸몄다. 그들은 당가를 조선 전통 방식에서 일본 황실 풍으로 바꿔 조선 왕실을 일본 황족에 준하는 대우를 하는 것처럼 보이고자 하였으며, 이러한이미지를 담은 사진첩과 관광엽서 등을 제작해 홍보함으로써 일본의 조선 지배를 대내외에 표방하는 수단으로 이용하였다.
일제강점기에 훼손된 궁궐건축물은 1961년 문화재관리국이 설립되고, 궁궐 전각들을 하나씩보수하면서 창덕궁 인정전도 제 모습을 찾기 시작했다. 당가에 있던 일본풍의 봉황그림을 일월오봉도로 교체하고, 조선시대 어좌의 권위 있는 모습을 되살렸다. 그러나 대형의 일월오봉병과 좌탑등 주요 부재들이 소실된 상태였기 때문에 본래의 모습을 완벽하게 찾지 못했다. 궁궐 고건축에대한 고증과 문화재 보수 기술력이 지금에 비해 많이 부족했기 때문이다. 오늘날 우리가 보는 창덕궁 인정전 당가의 모습은 구한말과 일제강점기를 거쳐 현대에 이르기까지 우리의 근현대사를고스란히 담고 있는 역사의 산물이라 하겠다.

영어초록

Although the dangga (wooden baldachin) adorning the king’s thrones in the main halls of the royal palaces of the Joseon Dynasty do not differ from each other, the folding screens representing the Sun, the Moon, and the Five Peaks placed on the wall behind the thrones do differ slightly from each other. The one in Injeongjeon Hall of Changdeokgung Palace is particularly unique in this respect. A four-part folding screen of the Five Peaks is placed on the upper part of the dangga wall, while the Painting of the Four Auspicious Animals is installed on its lower part. In fact, this is the only case in which the painting of the Sun, the Moon, and the Five Peaks and the painting of the Four Auspicious Animals are placed one above the other in the same space. The purpose of this study is to examine the relevant Uigwe (Royal Protocols of the Joseon Dynasty), photos, and other records in order to ascertain the history of how the danggain Injeongjeon Hall changed.
A change in the arrangement of the danggain Injeongjeon Hall occurred during the large-scale restoration of the royal palaces undertaken in 1908, following the relocation of King Sunjong’s (r. 1907-1910) main place of residence from Gyeongungung Palace to Changdeokgung Palace.
At that time, the vice-ministers appointed by the Japanese Residency-General were handling the country’s internal affairs under the Korea-Japan Treaty of 1907. Construction work at the royal palaces was carried out under the supervision of Vice-Minister Mihomatsu Gomiya (1859 -1935) of the Royal Residence Management Office. It was decided that the existing upper structure of the roof of the danggain Injeongjeon Hall would remain unchanged, however the height of the king’s throne would be lowered by removing the structure below it, and the structure of the dangga wall would be replaced with a Japanese-style door/window. The Painting of the Sun, the Moon, and the Five Peaks, which until then had adorned the façade of the wall, was replaced with a flamboyant painting of the Phoenix and Auspicious Animals, which customarily adorned the throne of the Japanese emperor. The intention behind this change was to make it look as if the Japanese treated the royal family of Joseon on an equal footing with Japan’s by changing the traditional Korean style of dangga to the Japanese style. They distributed photos and postcards of this new arrangement in order to publicize Japanese rule over Korea as a fact both internally and externally.
In the 1960s, attempts were finally made to restore the royal palace structures disfigured by the Japanese colonists. With the launch of the Cultural Properties Administration in 1961, work began on the restoration of the royal palace buildings one by one, including Injeongjeon Hall.
The Japanese-style painting of a phoenix was replaced with that of the Sun, the Moon, and the Five Peaks, and the king’s throne was restored to its former dignity. However, many of the structures that used to be there, including the folding screen of the Sun, the Moon, and the Five Peaks and the structure placed below the king’s throne, had been lost. Furthermore, matters related to archaeological verification of the royal palace structures and the skills and techniques required to repair cultural heritage objects left much to be desired at that time, particularly when compared to what can be done today. Sadly, the dangga that we can see in Injeongjeon Hall today is a result of the turbulent events that took place in the period spanning the Korean Empire, Japanese colonial rule, and national liberation.
