초대교회 시기의 전염병 창궐에 따른 기독교인의 대응에 관한 평가 (An Appraisal on the Response of Christians to the Epidemic Outbreak in the Early Church Period)

초록

2020년 세계 최고의 이슈는 코로나바이러스감염증-19(COVID-19, 이하 코로나19)이다. 코로나19가 2019년 12월 중국 우한에서 처음 발생한뒤 빠른 속도로 전 세계로 확산되자 세계보건기구(WHO)는 2020년 3월 11 일 ‘대유행’(펜데믹)을 선언하였다. 각 나라는 앞다투어 하늘길과 바닷길을막아 외국인의 유입을 차단시켰고, 국경을 봉쇄하였다. 졸업식, 결혼식, 장례식은 연기되거나 취소되었다. 재택근무, 자가 격리, 사회적 거리두기라는비대면 문화는 자영업자들의 수입을 반 토막 시켰고, 노동자들의 일거리를앗아갔다. 장기간 지속된 코로나19는 우울증 환자의 증가, 가족 내의 폭력증가, 실업자의 증가라는 새로운 사회적 문제를 일으켰다. 마치 ‘일상생활의 종말’을 보는 듯하다.
오늘날 한국교회가 마주한 코로나19는 초대교회가 직면했던 전염병 대유행과 유사하다. 1세기 전염병은 어떤 때에 매일 1만 명 이상의 사망자를배출시켰고, 2세기 안토니우스 역병은 로마제국 전체 인구의 25-30%를감소시켰고, 3세기 키프리아누스 역병은 2세기 때 보다 피해가 더 컸다. 3 세기에 걸친 역병 중에 이교도는 산으로 먼저 도망갔지만, 기독교인은 이웃 환자를 돌보고 간호 봉사에 헌신적이었다. 혹시 병이 옮아 죽게 되더라도 순교하는 마음으로 받아들이는 모습은 이교도의 마음을 사로잡았다. 역병이 끝날 즈음 이교도와 기독교인의 애착관계는 견고해져 개종자가 증가했고, 교회가 부흥했다. 반면 전염병 대응에 실패한 로마 제국은 인구 감소, 세입 감소, 높은 군인 사망률로 인해 쇠락의 길로 들어서게 되었다. 따라서 본 논문은 1세기 전염병과 2세기 안토니우스 역병과 3세기 키프리아누스 역병이 로마 제국에 창궐했을 때 초대교회가 이교도와 달리 어떻게 대응했는지, 기독교 선교에 끼친 영향은 무엇인지 살펴보고 오늘날 한국교회가 코로나19를 어떻게 대응해 나가는 것이 바람직한지 방향을 제시하는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 따라서 본 논문을 통하여 초대교회 당시 어떤전염병이 창궐했는지, 로마 황제들의 대응은 어떠했는지, 고대 철학자들의대응은 무엇인지, 이교도와 기독교인은 각각 어떻게 대응했고, 결과는 무엇인지를 살펴볼 것이다. 초대교회가 전염병 대응에 성공했던 모습이 한국교회에 그대로 전달되어 코로나19를 극복하고 세상의 빛과 소금이 되어 다시한번 비상할 수 있기를 기대한다

영어초록

The world’s best issue in 2020 is Coronavirus Infectious Disease-19 (COVID-19, hereinafter referred to as Corona19). After the first outbreak of Corona19 in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and rapidly spreading around the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a ‘pandemic’ on March 11, 2020. Each country vigorously blocked the air and sea travel, banned international immigration, tourism, and closed the borders. Graduation ceremonies, weddings and funerals were postponed or canceled. The remote culture of working from home, self-isolation, and social distancing has cut the income of self-employed people in half and took away worker’s jobs. It has created new social problems: an increase in the number of depressed patients, violence in the family, and in the number of unemployed. It is as if you are seeing the ‘end of everyday life.’ Corona19 faced by Korean church today is similar to the pandemic faced by the early church. The first-century epidemic at some time produced more than 10,000 deaths every day, the second-century Antonius plague reduced 25-30% of the entire Roman Empire, and the third-century Cyprianus plague was more damaging than the Antonius plague in the second century.
During the three centuries of plagues, pagans first fled to the mountain, but Christians cared for their neighbors and devoted themselves to the nursing service. Even though Christians died of sickness by helping non-Christians, the way they accepted it with martyrdom captured the hearts of pagans. By the time the plague ended, the relationships between pagans and Christians became strong, new converts increased, and the church rose. On the other hand, the Roman Empire, which failed to respond to the pandemic, was on a path of decline due to declining population, revenues and high military mortality rate.
Therefore, this article examines the plagues of the 1st Therefore, this article examines the plagues of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd century within the Roman Empire, how the early Christian church responded differently from paganism, the influence it had on Christian missions, and aims to present these examples as a reminder to the Korean church of the resilience needed in coping with Corona19. Therefore, through this article, we will look at the pandemic that occurred in the early church what the Roman emperors responded to, how the ancient philosophers responded, how pagans and Christians responded, and what the outcome was. It is hoped that the early church’s success in responding to the past epidemic will be conveyed to the current Korean church as it is to overcome Corona19, become the light and salt of the world, and rise again
