<장석전>에 나타난 전염병과 활인(活人)의 의미 (The Meaning of Infectious Diseases and Living People in )

초록

본고에서는 <장석전>에 나타난 전염병에 대한 대처와 활인의 의미를 분석하고 이를 바탕으로 영웅소설의 20세기적 변모의 한 양상을 살폈다. 본 논문은 다음 네 가지로 요약할 수 있다.
첫째, <장석전>이 근원설화인 홍순언 이야기를 어떤 방식으로 변형했는지 살펴보았다. <장석전>이 다른 홍순언 이야기를 자장으로 하는 여타 소설작품과 다르게 나타나는 것은 전염병과 전쟁, 사형의 순간이다. 즉 <장석전>은 <홍순언>에서보다 전반적으로 ‘극적’인 요소가 강하게 드러나는, 더 ‘절박’한 가운데 ‘죽음’을 가까이한 사람들의 이야기로 정리할 수 있다.
둘째, <장석전>에서 전염병이 ‘사실’과 ‘은유’로서 어떻게 작용하는지 알아보았다. 여기서 전염병은 질병 그 자체라기보다는 문학적 은유-선조들의 인색함에 대한 징벌적 의미-로 나타난다. 질병은 도덕적 잘못에 대한 자연스러운 결과로 나타나며 자신이나 가족의 죄의 대가일 수 있다.
셋째. 활인(活人)이 서사 내에서 어떻게 작용하는지 보았다. 작품에서 네 차례에 걸쳐 나타나는 활인 즉, 전염병 창궐, 전쟁 상황, 사형집행이라는 급박한 순간에 드러나는 활인을 살펴보았다. <장석전>은 전염병 상황에서 왕처녀를 살리고 전쟁터에서 적장을 살리는 것에, 무훈으로 인한 승리보다는 자신의 군사를 죽이지 않는 것에 초점을 맞추고 따라서 전투장면도 그에 맞게 구성되었다고 볼 수 있는 것이다.
넷째. 마지막 고전소설의 시대의 작품으로서 <장석전>의 현재성을 살피고 문학사적 위상을 정립하였다. <장석전>은 당시 일제가 전염병을 퇴치한다는 명목 하에 민중을 억압하는 공포적인 강제분리 정책과는 다른 방식으로 전염병을 대한다. 의기를 가지고 도우면 서로 상생할 수 있다고 하며 전염병 그 자체보다 마을공동체 와해로 인한 인간 사이의 단절이 더 무섭다는 것을 말한다. 주변사람들에게 인심내지 않고 자본을 축적한 승상댁의 상황이 단절의 원인이었다는 것도 마찬가지 맥락이다. 그리고 고립된 인물을 도운 영웅 장석이 결국 자신도 살 수 있게 된다.
전염병이라는 재난에 정면으로 맞아 쓰러져 그것을 좌절 혹은 체념하거나 무기력하게 죽음을 기다리는 상황에서도 어떤 식으로든지 살리려는 노력과 공동체의 유지는 희망을 준다.
지금까지 우리 고전소설 연구에서 <장석전>을 전염병을 다룬 작품으로 주목하지 않았고 따라서 이에 대한 연구가 이루어지지 않았다. 본 연구는 조선 후기에서 개화기로 넘어가는 세계화 시기에 감당하기 힘든 전염병을 겪은 소설 향유자들의 시각을 천착하는 것이라 하겠다. <장석전>에서 전염병을 중심으로 다룬 본 연구는 앞으로 전염병에 대한 은유, 전염병과 종교, 전염병과 정치권력의 관계 등을 면밀히 다루는 후속연구의 시작이 될 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, <Jangseokjeon> was analyzed by paying attention to how to cope with infectious diseases and how to survive. Thus, the situation of the epidemic that shook the foundation of life in the late Joseon Dynasty was examined in the narrative and related to society of the time. The conclusions of this paper can be summarized into the following four.
First, we looked at how <Jangseokjeon> transformed the story of <Hong Soon-eon>, the original narrative. It is the moment of infectious disease, war, and death penalty that <Jangseokjeon> appears differently from other novels based on the story of <Hong Soon-eon>. In other words, <Jangseokjeon> can be summarized as a story of people who have been closer to "death" in a more "desperate" way, which shows a "dramatic" element in general than in <Hong Soon-eon>.
Second, in <Jangseokjeon>, we looked into how infectious diseases work as 'facts' and 'metaphor'. This is a question of how novel enjoyers perceive the reality of the epidemic and how to present measures to overcome the epidemic. First of all, in the first half of <Jangseokjeon>, a realistic approach to infectious diseases is well revealed. The problem is that the epidemic here appears as a literary metaphor-a punitive meaning for the stinginess of ancestors- rather than the disease itself. Disease is said to show a natural causal relationship to moral error, and it could have been the price of one's own or one's own ancestors' sins. In addition, it is said that infectious diseases in the work are transmitted differently according to character or social status.
Third, I saw how Hwallin works within the narrative. We looked at the bow that appears four times in the work, that is, the bow that appears in the urgent moment of the outbreak of infectious diseases, the war situation, and the execution. <Jangseokjeon> focuses on saving the surrendered enemy commander rather than cutting the enemy's neck on the battlefield and not killing his own soldiers rather than winning due to martial arts, so it can be said that the battle scene is organized accordingly.
Fourth, as a work in the era of the last classic novel, the presentability of <Jangseokjeon> was examined and the literary history status was established. <Jangseokjeon> revealed a desire to find a way to deal with infectious diseases in a different way from the government's terrifying forced separation policy at the time, that is, in a traditional way.
In the end, what I want to say is that the way to overcome the natural disasters that infectious diseases are sweeping is to help each other and live, which means that disconnection between humans caused by the village community and damage is scarier than the epidemic itself. It is in the same context that the situation of the monk's house, which accumulated capital without generosity to the people around it, was the cause of the disconnection. And the fact that Jang Seok, who helped an isolated person, was eventually able to live his life is paradoxically realistic compared to his approach to excessive metaphor without seeing it in the reality surrounding the epidemic in modern novels at that time.
Thus, the efforts and community's maintenance of the disaster of infectious diseases in any way give hope even in situations where they fall head-on and collapse, give up, or helplessly waiting for death.
Until now, Korean classical novel research has not paid much attention to <Jangseokjeon> as a work dealing with infectious diseases, and thus no research has been conducted. This study is based on the perspective of novel enjoyers who suffered from an infectious disease that was unbearable during the globalization period from the late Joseon Dynasty to the enlightenment period. This study, which focuses on infectious diseases in <Jangseokjeon>, will be the beginning of a follow-up study that closely deals with metaphors about infectious diseases, infectious diseases and religions, and the relationship between infectious diseases and political power.
