초록

The Minamata disease incident[水俣病] is known internationally as the largest pollution incident in post-war Japan and a tragedy that revealed the negative aspects of modern industrial civilization. The primary reason Minamata disease occurred and escalated into a major pollution incident was that, in the midst of Japan’s desire for rapid economic recovery following its defeat in the war, the people blindly believed that prioritizing economic growth and generating profits was the shortcut to building a prosperous nation. This belief led to their full cooperation with the state and corporate profit-first economic policies. Ogata Masato, in a fierce struggle to hold the Chisso Corporation accountable, fought vigorously against the Minamata disease incident to “avenge” his father, who had died from severe Minamata disease during Masato’s childhood. Eventually, he realized, “I too was just another Chisso.” Returning to his identity as an individual, he recognized that he too bore responsibility for the Minamata disease incident. With this awareness, he was reminded of the “memory of life” and has been searching for a way to universally save all living beings, including the perpetrators, by sincerely apologizing in his heart to all life forms sacrificed to Minamata disease. Highlighting this journey of profound change in the perception of a Minamata disease patient is the purpose of this paper.
