Purpose: The objective of this study was to determine nursing history describing Hansen's disease in Korea at National Sorokdo Hospital. Nurses' tasks, roles, and activities or eradicating Hansen's disease were investigated based on oral statements provided by former and incumbent nurses. Methods: This study employed historical research method using historical data and oral statement data collected from December 2015 through June 2016. Participants were eight nurses (three retired nurses and five incumbent nurses with average experience of 32 years) who had been working at the National Sorokdo Hospital from 1967 to 2000. Results: From 1967 to 1990, conditions for proper nursing and personal living were inadequate due to the lack of nursing manpower, medicine, supplies, logistics, and other equipment. Subsequently, the lack of doctors made nurses perform various tasks such as prescription, diagnosis, surgical operation, and surgery assistance. From 1990 to 2000, with increasing number of inpatients due to the aging population, seven town treatment rooms were integrated into four wards that led to repositioning of manpower. Remaining nurses were sent to these wards to systematically perform basic care and direct care. Thus, patient care environment was ultimately improved. Conclusion: This study describes the overall situation of nurses' work environment and conditions at the National Sorokdo Hospital from late 1967 to 2000. Although oral data might be somewhat insufficient, they were meaningful in that they unveiled unknown nurses' tasks, roles, and activities during that time period. They also provided a new mark in the nursing history.
