소림 조석진(1853～1920) 작<백자청화산수문병> 고찰 (A Study on “White Porcelain Vase with Landscape design” Made by Cho Seok-jin)

초록

<백자청화산수문병>은 근대 도자 가운데 흔치 않게 제작자, 제작 연도, 문양 소재를 분명히 알 수 있는 작품이다. 기면에 “松下問童子 言师採藥 只在此山中 雲深不知處 辛亥夏日 小琳寫”가 써져있어, 소림 조석진(小琳 趙錫晉, 1853～1920)이 1911년 당대 가도(779～843)의 시 “尋隱者不遇”를 도상화한 송하문동자 도상을 그린 것임을 알 수 있다. 기형은 전형적인 고려시대 매병 형태인데, 구연 일부에는 고의적으로 각이 나 있다. 병이 백자이지만 고려 매병 형태로 제작된 것은 당시 고려청자 수집 및 재현이 활발했던 사회적 분위기와 맞물린다. 더욱이 작가가 소속되어 있던 관립공업전습소는 청자 연구 및 재현사업에 적극적이었기에 작가의 제작 경향에 영향을 미쳤을 가능성이 있다. 그리고 병의 구연 일부가 변형된 것은 근대기 외부로부터 유입된 새로운 조형 형태가 모방된 것으로 보인다. 이는 서울 일부 소비유적에서 출토된 외국산 잉크병의 구연과 유사해 주목된다.
한편, 병의 화면 전체에 세밀한 필치의 청화로 문양이 그려졌으며, 상단 일부에는 짙은 먹색의 안료로 제발이 써졌다. 기면에 그려진 송하문동자 도상은 조선시대부터 그려졌던 소재다. 조선후기 화원 화가 작품에서 찾아볼 수 있으며, 19세기경 관요에서 제작된 청화백자에도 나타난다. 조석진이 계승되어 온 화원의 작품이나 모본을 참고했을 수 있지만, 그가 활발히 활동했던 조선말～근대초기에 다량 유입된 상해 발간 화보에서 유사한 구도와 화풍을 찾아볼 수 있어 이를 참고했을 가능성 또한 배제할 수 없다. 또 하나 주목되는 것은 <백자청화산수문병>이 제작되었을 시기 중국에서 시서화가 결합된 문인화풍의 천강채자기가 유행했다는 점이다. 양자 모두 공장이 도안화된 문양을 기계적으로 장식한 것이 아닌 전문 작가가 문인화적인 소재와 구성을 표현해냈다. 특히 마치 회화 작품과 같이 화면 한 곳에 제시 및 간지, 작가명을 쓴 점이 주목되는데, 이러한 특징은 조선시대 도자에서는 찾아볼 수 없다. 따라서 조석진이 <백자청화산수문병>을 제작하는데 당시 중국에서 유행한 도자 제작 경향의 영향을 받았을 가능성도 시사한다.
본 연구는 근대기 제작된 도자의 한 성격을 파악하고자, <백자청화산수문병>의 조형을 면밀히 분석하고 작가의 주변 환경 및 동시기 주변국의 요업 경향을 함께 살펴보았다. 이에 근대기 다자간에 이루어졌던 교류로 출현한 새로운 면모를 발견할 수 있었고, 이것이 기존에 계승되어 온 전통 양식과 결합된 과정을 확인해 본데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

“White Porcelain Vase with Landscape design” offers a clear picture of the makers, the year of manufacture, and the design of patterns of pottery made during the modern period. On the surface, there is written as “松下問童子 言师採藥 只在此山中 雲深不知處 辛亥夏日 小琳寫” So, it is clear that Sorim Cho Seok-jin drew the child under the pine tree in 1911. This vase is a typical form of Maebyeong during the Goryeo Dynasty. However, some of the beaks are Intentionally sharp. Although the bottle is a white porcelain, there is a special reason why it was made in the form of a Maebyeong during the Goryeo Dynasty. It is because the collection and reproduction of Goryeo celadon was active at the time. Moreover, the researchers of the Governmental Industrial Research Institute, which the artist belonged, was actively engaged in the study and reproduction of celadon ware, so it is possible that the artists who are associated to the institute contributed to the making of the pottery. And the deformation of the mouth of the bottle appears to have replicated a new form of molding that came from outside the country of modern period. It is especially notable that it is similar to the spout of imported ink bottle found at some historical site in Seoul. Meanwhile, drawing colored by blue pigments were detailed throughout the surface of the vase. And on the other side, typescript was written in black ink. The child under the pine tree painted on the surface of the bottle, is a material that was started to draw from the Joseon Dynasty. This category of paintings can be found from Imperial painters in the late Joseon Dynasty, and even in White porcelain, made in Official kiln during the 19th century. It is possible that Cho Seok-jin may have referred Imperial painters work which was succeed by generation or its duplicates. In the later phase of Joseon Dynasty, when he was actively engaged in his career, a number of photo books published in Shanghai were brought in, a similar structure and style of painting was found there. Therefore, it can not be ruled out that he may have referred it. Another noticeable fact is that the trend of the literary painting style of Qianjiangcai Porcelain(淺絳彩瓷器), was popular in China when the “White Porcelain Vase with Landscape design” was created. Both expressed literary painting style using the material and its composition, not by mechanically decorating the design patterns of potters. In particular, it is noteworthy that they wrote the words in black ink on a surface of the vase, as like a painting. These characteristics are not found in pottery from the Joseon Dynasty. Consequently, it is possible that Cho Seok-jin was influenced by the popular pottery in China at the time. The study concentrate to identify the characteristics of pottery made during the modern period. To this end, the composition of White Porcelain Vase with Landscape design was analyzed. And looked at the ceramics trends in neighboring countries at the same time as the author's surroundings. The study is significant in discovering new aspects that emerged as multilateral exchanges in the modern period, and how they combined with traditional styles that are inherited.
