니체에 있어서 병과 건강의 의미 (The Meaning of Illness and Health from Nietzsche)

초록

본 논문은 니체철학에서 다루고 있는 병과 건강의 의미를 파악하는 데 목표를 두고 있다. 니체의 병과 건강 개념은 진정한 삶과 그렇지 않은 삶을 구분하기 위한 철학적 메타포로 사용된다. 하이데거가 우리가 ‘존재 망각’의 병에 결렸고 탈은폐의 존재 체험에서 건강을 되찾아야 한다고 생각했다면, 니체는 우리가 ‘삶의 망각’이라는 병에 걸렸고 삶을 긍정하며 사는 건강을 되찾아야 한다고 생각했다. 니체의 건강 담론은 실천적인 목적을 갖고 있다. 니체의 건강 담론은 병과 건강에 대해서 살펴보고 이를 토대로 시대의 병을 치유하려 하기 때문이다. 니체는 자신의 건강 담론이 병과 건강에 대한 새로운 관점을 제시함으로써 사람들이 건강에 관해 새로운 관점을 획득하고 이를 통해서 새로운 건강한 삶을 살아가길 원했다.
니체의 병과 건강 담론에서 가장 중요한 범주는 ‘삶’이다. 왜냐하면 건강과 병을 나누는 기준이 바로 삶이기 때문이다. 병과 건강은 삶을 부정하는지 아니면 긍정하는지에 좌우된다. 삶을 긍정하는 삶은 건강한 삶이고 삶을 부정하는 삶은 병든 삶인 것이다. 또 하나의 중요한 범주는 ‘가치’이다. 삶이 어떤 가치를 추구하느냐에 따라 삶을 긍정하게 되는지 아니면 부정하게 되는지가 결정되기 때문이다.
니체는 한편으로 근대가 믿고 있는 건강한 가치가 실제로는 병든 가치라는 주장을 펼침으로써 근대의 건강이데올로기를 해체시키려 한다. 그리고 니체는 다른 한편으로 새로운 건강한 삶의 이상을 제시하고 있다. 본 논문은 우선 2장에서 니체 자신의 병과 건강에 대해서 살펴보고, 3장에서 삶의 관점에서, 다시 말해 힘에의 의지와 가상에의 의지를 중심으로 병과 건강의 개념을 논의하게 될 것이다. 4장에서 이성, 진리, 과학을, 5장에서 도덕과 종교를 각각 병의 관점에서 서술하고, 6장에서 니체에게서 건강의 의미와 건강한 삶의 이상에 대해서 논의하게 될 것이다.

영어초록

The main aim of this article is to understand the meanings of 'illness' and of 'health' in Nietzsche's philosophy. Nietzsche's notions of disease and of health are significant philosophical metaphors, which he intends to distinguish between real and non-life. Whereas, according to Heidegger, we suffer from the oblivion of Being, and thus, need to restore our health in the disclosing experience of Sein, Nietzsche thought that we contracted the illness of "forgetfulness of life", the recovery from which depends upon the affirmation of life.
Indeed, Nietzsche's discourse on health has a clear practical purpose. That is to say, he seeks to shed light on what health and illness consist in, in order to heal the disease of this age and enhance the health of our life. Nietzsche's discussion of health presents new philosophical perspectives on illness and health, which could help us live healthier lives.
The most important category in Nietzsche's discourse on health is 'life'. For it is life that directly distinguishes between health and disease. The distinction between health and disease depends on whether one affirms or denies one's own life. Life-affirmation is the standard for the health of life, while life-denial is the sign of a pathological condition of life. Another important category is 'value'. What genuinely matters is the active pursuit of value, and what values one's life pursues determines whether one’s life is healthy or morbid.
On the one hand, Nietzsche argues that in fact, what the modern take as 'healthy values' are nothing but pathological conditions, and in so doing, he tries to dismantle the 'health ideology' of modern times. Nietzsche, on the other hand, presents a form of healthy life as a new ideal.
In this writing, in Chapter 2, I will examine Nietzsche's own states of illness and of health. Chapter 3 will discuss the concepts of disease and of health 'from the point of view of life'’, or in other words, from the perspective of the 'will to power' and the 'will to appearance'. I will deal with reason, truth, and science in Chapter 4, and morality and religion in Chapter 5 respectively, in terms of disease. In Chapter 6, finally, I will discuss the 'meaning of health' and the 'ideal of healthy life'.
