세형동검 검초의 유형별 패대 방식과 변천의 의미 (Different Ways of Wearing Slender-Type Bronze Daggers According to Scabbard Type and the Meaning of Changes in Wearing Method)

초록

세형동검류 검초는 세장죽엽형(A형), 나팔구직선형(B형), 나팔구결입형 목태식(木胎式)(CI식), 나팔구결입형높은금구식(CII식), 나팔구결입형 테두리식(CIII식), 직선장방형(D형)으로 분류된다. 각 형식 검초의 검 착장후 전체 길이, 평양시 정백리 채토장3 검초의 패대 관련 견직포대(絹織布帶), 우리나라와 세계 각지의 도검 패대 관련 자료 등을 고려할 때, 세장죽엽형과 나팔구직선형은 신체 정면 허리 위치의 포요대(布腰帶)에 사선으로 꽂아, 나팔구결입형은 신체 정면 약간 치우친 지점 또는 신체 측면 허리 부위의 포요대에 포대를 걸고 묶어, 직선장방형은 포요대에 꽂거나 나팔구결입형과 유사한 방식으로 패대하였을 것으로 생각된다.
세형동검류 검초는 나팔구결입형이 출현하면서 패대 위치와 방식 또한 바뀌었는데, 이 시점부터 검초에삼각문, 세장삼각문, 능형문 등이 시문되어 있는 화려한 금구가 본격적으로 착장되기 시작한다. 이와 같은 양상은 검초 패대 방식의 변화가 검초의 강화된 의장성을 외부에 현시하기 위한 의도가 개입되어 있음을 시사한다. 또한 금구 착장 나팔구결입형 검초가 후기로 갈수록 주변 지역을 압도하는 부장 수준을 보여 주는 상위무덤에만 한정되는 현상을 감안할 때, 이러한 검초의 제작, 보급, 소유가 당시 일정 범위 이상의 지역에서 최상위로 군림하는 상위 수장층에서 이루어졌던 것으로 여겨진다.

영어초록

The scabbard types of slender-type bronze daggers can be classified into the longleaf type (Type A), straight-horn type(Type B), composite horn-moktae type(Type CI), composite horn-high ornamenttype(Type CII), composite horn-edge type(Type CIII), and lastly straight rectangular-type(Type D). Based on an observation of the entire length of eachsword when sheathed and worn, of the silk belt(絹織布帶) related to the wearing of scabbards discovered in No. 3 Quarry Pit of Jeongbaek-ri, in Pyongyang, and related data for the wearing of swords in Korea and other parts of the world, etc., it was proposed that the long leaf-type and the straight horn-type scabbards were worn by being inserted into the fabric belt at the waist in a diagonal direction, in the front of the body; that the composite horn-type scabbard was worn by hanging and tying to a burlap bag that was positioned at the front of the body slightly to the side or towards the side; and that the straight rectangular-type scabbard was worn by either of the ways described above.
The position and method by which the scabbards of the slender-type bronze daggers were worn changed with the advent of the composite horn-type scabbard, and from then, splendid decorations consisting of fine linear designs, such as triangle patterns, long triangle patterns, lozenges, etc., began to be rendered onto the scabbards in earnest. It may be suggested that changes in the wearing method of scabbards were associated with the intention to reveal the enhanced decorative design of the scabbards. In addition, given that, over time, highly decorative composite horn-type scabbards come to be placed in upper-level status tombs with grave goods that greatly surpass the amount of grave goods found it other tombs of the area, it can be proposed that the production and distribution the scabbards had been overseen by the upper-level chieftains who reigned as the highest class in a given region, and who also possessed the scabbards.
