新羅 石塔에서 別石 塔身받침의 形式과 特徵 (A Study on the Forms and Characteristics of Underpinnings Made of Different Stones in Silla Stone Stupas)

초록

신라 석탑의 탑신받침은 지지하는 아래쪽 부재인 갑석 상면에 각형 2단으로 조출하는 방식이 일반적이었다. 그러나 순수하게 탑신받침 자체를 별석으로 조성한 석탑들도 건립되었으나, 이에 대해 구체적인 연구는 없었다. 별석 탑신받침은 단순한 받침형식의 변화 양상이 아니라 신라 석탑 중 이형석탑의 조영 특징을 밝혀줄 수 있는 중요한 요소로서 검토할 필요가 있다.
탑신받침의 연원에 대해서 목조건축의 가구 구조에 의한 부분일 것이라는 기존 견해를 수긍하면서 기존 견해와 달리 기단부와 본 건물의 사이에 조성되던 葛石이라는 부분이 탑신받침의 연원일 가능성을 제시하였다. 신라 석탑에서 별석 탑신받침을 보이는 석탑들은 경북지역 특히 경주에 집중적으로 분포하고 있어 지역적 특징을 보임을 알 수 있다. 별석 탑신받침의 형식은 크게 감입형과 판석형으로 분류하여 다시 조성방식에 따라 세부적으로 살펴보았다. 감입형에서 점차 부재를 줄여가는 일반적인 신라 석탑의 양식 흐름에 따라 판석형으로 변화하였고 가장 많은 형식은 판석형-1형식으로 단층기단 석탑에서 주로 채택하였음을 확인하였다. 고려시대에도 신라 별석 탑신받침의 영향을 받아 각형 2단의 탑신받침 형식이 조성되고 있어 별석 탑신받침이 꾸준히 계승되고 있음을 알 수 있다.
마지막으로 별석 탑신받침은 다양한 석탑 유형의 전개라는 측면과 석탑이 목탑을 번안하였음을 보여줄 수 있는 하나의 지표적인 요소로 볼 수 있다는 점이 신라 석탑사에서 갖는 가장 큰 의의라고 생각된다.

영어초록

The common way that underpinnings were built for stone stupas in Silla was to put a two-story square shape section on top of the flat stone laid on another stone, the supporting the member of framework at the bottom. However, there were stone stupas whose underpinnings were built purely with different stones, but there has been no concrete research on them. Underpinnings made of different stones deserve a review as an important element to shed light on the changing patterns of underpinning forms and also the construction characteristics of non-typical stone stupas of Silla.
Accepting the old view that the origin of underpinnings must be a part of furniture structure in wooden buildings, the investigator raised a possibility that curb stone, which was built between the stylobate and the main body, might be their origin unlike the old view. The Silla stone stupas whose underpinnings made of different stones are particularly concentrated in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk Province, which indicates that they had local characteristics. Underpinnings made of different stones were categorized into the insertion type and flagstone type and examined in more details according to the construction methods. The insertion type was replaced by the flagstone type according to the general flow of styles among Silla stone stupas characterized by the gradual decrease of the member of framework. The most popular form was the flagstone type-1, which was usually adopted for stone stupas with a single-story stylobate. Influenced by the underpinnings made of different stones of Silla, they built a two-story square shape underpinnings in Goryeo, which indicates that underpinnings made of different stones had continued to be transmitted.
Finally, underpinnings made of different stones hold the greatest significance in the history of Silla stone stupas in the aspect of the development of various stone stupa types and as an indicator to show that stone stupas were adapted from wooden ones.
