고려시대 변새시(邊塞詩)의 전개 양상과 문학적 특질 (The development patterns and literary characteristics of Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) during the Goryeo Dynasty)

초록

‘변새시(邊塞詩)’란 변방의 풍광과 종군의 체험을 다룬 시를 뜻한다. 넓은 의미에서 보면 ‘변새’를 제재로 하는 모든 시를 의미하지만, 좁은 의미에서 보자면 이민족과의 전쟁, 병영의 모습과 병사들의 생활상, 병사의 고뇌, 변방의 풍광, 남편이나 아들을 군대에 보내고 남겨진 가족들의 고통과 그리움 등을 다룬 시를 뜻한다. 중국문학사에서 변새시의 출발은 멀리 『시경』으로 거슬러 올라갈 정도로 그 역사가 오래되었지만, 변새시의 황금기는 당나라 시대였다. 특히 성당(盛唐)시대에는 소위 ‘변새시파(邊塞詩派)’의 출현으로 수많은 변새시가 창작되었고, 한시사의 발전에 기여를 하게 되었다.
변새시의 주요 내용을 살펴보면 변방과 새외(塞外)의 쓸쓸한 풍경, 지역의 독특한 문화, 전장(戰場)의 긴장감과 두려움, 군영과 군인들의 모습, 종군(從軍)의 다양한 경험, 황량한 들판과 곤궁한 백성들의 삶, 아름다운 자연, 변방에서 느끼는 고독감과 인생무상, 나그네 의식과 객수(客愁) 또는 객창감(客窓感), 가족들이 있는 집으로 돌아가고자 하는 소망, 일망무제의 드넓은 자연에서 느끼는 장대하고 호쾌한 감정, 이역(異域) 문화에 대한 관심과 소개, 국토에 대한 애정과 변방의 중요성에 관한 인식 및 국가와 임금에 대한 충성 등 매우 다양하다. 특히 황량한 들판에서 살아가는 곤궁한 백성들의 삶이나 국토에 대한 애정과 변방의 중요성에 관한 인식 등은 변방에 파견된 관료로서 바라본 것들이다.
한국한문학사에서는 고려시대 김부식(金富軾)으로부터 변새시 창작이 시작된다. 그는 ‘묘청의 난’을 진압하기 위해 종군하면서 2수의 시를 남겼다. 김부식에 이어 이규보(李奎報)에 이르면 본격적으로 변새시 창작이 이루어진다. 이규보는 종군의 체험을 바탕으로 변새시를 13수 창작하였다. 그후 김극기(金克己), 김구(金坵), 홍간(洪侃)을 거쳐 14세기에 이르면 고려시대 변새시 창작이 일반화된다. 그 대표적인 시인이 이달충(李達衷), 정몽주(鄭夢周), 김구용(金九容), 이첨(李詹), 정도전(鄭道傳), 권근(權近)이다. 고려시대 변새시의 가장 큰 특징으로는 당나라 시인들의 영향을 들 수 있다. 이백이나 두보는 물론이요 가도, 잠삼과 같은 변새시파 시인들이 썼던 변새시의 내용, 형식, 기법, 특질 등을 모방하는 양상이 나타난다. 또 한 가지 특징으로는 변방 관료로 파견된 경험, 중국 사행길에 목도한 변방 지역의 풍광, 종군의 체험이 고르게 나타난다는 점이다. 이는 조선시대 변새시가 종군보다는 변방 관료로서의 체험이나 사행길에 목도한 풍광이 훨씬 더 많은 것과 비교가 된다. 고려시대 변새시 작가들 중 이규보나 이색은 그들의 작시 경향이 워낙 폭넓고 다양하기에 변새시 창작 역시 다양한 한시 창작의 욕구로 보인다. 이에 비해 김구, 홍간, 정몽주, 김구용, 이첨, 정도전, 권근 등은 중국 사신으로 갈 때 목도한 변방의 체험이나 직접적인 종군, 변방 관료로서의 경험을 바탕으로 작시되었다는 점도 흥미롭다. 고려시대 문학사 전체를 볼 때, 고려후기에 본격적으로 시작된 변새시 창작은 한시 창작의 다양한 편폭을 넓혀주었다는 점에서 의미를 갖는다.

영어초록

‘Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩)’ means a poem about the scenery of the border area and the experience of service in a war. In a broad sense, it means all poems which are written about ‘Byeonsae(邊塞)’. But in a narrow sense, It refers to a poem about the war with different peoples, the life of soldiers, the anguish of soldiers, the scenery of the border, and the suffering and longing of families left behind after sending their husbands or sons to the military.
In the history of Chinese literature, Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩)’s departure is so long that it dates back far to <The Book of Odes>. However, the golden age of the Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) was the Tang Dynasty. In particular, in the heyday of the Tang Dynasty, a group of poets pursuing so-called Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) emerged, and they created numerous Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) and contributed to the development of the history of the Chinese poem.
The main contents of Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) are as follows: the lonely scenery of the border, the unique culture of the region, the tension and fear of the battlefield, the images of military camps and soldiers, various experiences of warlords and soldiers, the lives of the desolate fields and poor people, the loneliness and life on the border, the traveler’s loneliness and nostalgia, the desire to return home to his family, the great nature, the interest in foreign culture, and loyalty to the country and the king, etc.
In particular, affection for the lives of needy people living in desolate fields and the land, and their perception of the importance of the periphery came from the perspective of officials dispatched to the periphery. In the history of Korean literature, Kim Bu-sik of the Goryeo Dynasty began the creation of Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩). He left two poems as he marched to quell the Myocheng Rebellion. Following Kim Boo-sik, Lee Kyu-bo created Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) in earnest. Based on the experience of the battlefield, Lee Kyu-bo created about 10 Byeonsae poems.
Since then, Kim Kuk-gi, Kim Gu, and Honggan have written Byeonsae poems, the creation of Byeonsae poems during the Goryeo Dynasty is common in the 14th century. The representative poets are Lee Dal-chung, Jeong Mong-ju, Kim Gu-yong, Lee Cheom, Jeong Do-jeon, and Kwon Geun. The greatest characteristic of Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) during the Goryeo Dynasty is the influence of Tang poets. Poets in the Goryeo Dynasty copied the contents, forms, techniques, and characteristics of Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) which were written by Tang poets such as Jamsam, as well as Yi Baek and Du Bo.
Another characteristic is that the experience of being dispatched as a peripheral official, the scenery of the border area on the way to China, and the experience of the battlefield are evenly shown. On the other hand, the Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) in the Joseon Dynasty shows much more scenery on the road to travel and experience as a peripheral official. Lee Kyu-bo and Lee Color among the artists of Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) in Goryeo Dynasty have a wide and diverse tendency to create. Therefore, he wrote Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩) as one of the various methods of creating Chinese poems. Interestingly, however, Kim Gu, Honggan, Chung Mong-joo, Kim Gu-yong, Lee Cheom, Jeong Do-jeon, and Kwon Geun wrote poems based on their experiences as Chinese envoys, direct battlefields, or as border officials. The creation of the Byeonsae Poetry(邊塞詩), which began in earnest in the late Goryeo period in the literary history of the Goryeo Dynasty, is meaningful in that it expanded the range of the creation of Chinese poems.
