「토지」와 겁탈의 변검술 (Various Faces of Rape in Park, Kyungri’s 「Toji(the Land)」)

초록

이 글은 서사의 중요한 계기로 작용하지만 이와 관련된 연구는 거의 축적되어 있지 않은 『토지』의 겁탈모티프를 분석함으로써 겁탈의 가부장적 계보를밝히고 이에 대한 여성인물들의 대응양식을 통해 여성의 주체적, 능동적 가능성과 가부장제 이데올로기에 대한 반담론을 가능성을 찾고자 하는 시도이다.
이성애, 성매매, 성폭력을 동일선상에 위치지우는 연속선 개념과 비가렐로의 겁탈의 계보학 등에 기대어 겁탈은 정상과 질서를 위협하는 예외적이고 일탈적 충동이 아니라 정상과 질서가 바탕해 있는 구조, 즉 가부장 권력, 제도,젠더, 국가 등의 전 담론체계와 연동된 폭력임을 드러내었다. 소설의 남성인물들은 사랑과 겁탈을 분할하고 있지만, 여성을 동원하여 남성주체를 성장시키며 동성간의 연대 또한 공고히 하는 매개로 작용한다는 점에서 양자는 상통함을 밝혀내었다.
또한 새론 마커스와 깁슨-그래함의 담론전략을 원용하여 겁탈을 수용하는여성인물의 대응양식을 해석함으로써 타자화와 피해자화로 작동하는 여성 통제 매커니즘을 넘어서는 가능성을 찾을 수 있었다. 정조관념으로부터 일탈하는 여성인물들의 태도에 유의하여 죽음 혹은 의사죽음을 명하는 가부장제와협상하거나 가부장제를 부정하는 주체화의 궤적을 탐색하였다. 욕망을 기입하고 스스로가 상황과 맥락을 구성하는 여성인물의 능동성에서 여성을 피해자화함으로써 스스로의 주체성을 확보하는 남성지배 이데올로기에 균열을 일으키는 반담론의 가능성을 확인하였다.

영어초록

Rape is one of the most salient motifs in Park, Kyungri’s roman-fleuve, 「Toji(The Land)」, which has rarely been analysed in depth, though. This paper tries to deal with every episodes of rape described in the 「Toji」 with focus on uncovering the partriarchal nature of rape, through which the long paths of establishment of women’s subjectivity can be traced and reconstructed to make important opportunities to overcome the patriarchal ideology and dominance.
Rape is not stand-alone violence against women’s body.
According to the radical feminism, sexual violence and offence,bisexual love, and prostitution are located at the same continuum based on power structure of the society. Rape is not an exceptional,impetuous offence which threatens normality and orderliness of the society. It is nothing but the normality and orderliness itself. It is just one of the ways for the dominant narrative system to run, on which patriarchal powers, social institutions, gender, and nation-state can be constituted and maintained. Even though the male characters in the roman would discern rape from love, they only show that these two are two sides of the same coin: at the cost of the female characters’sacrifices, they can achieve their own success and, sometimes, they can get significant opportunities for their solidarity with each other.
This paper applies the narrative strategy against rape script set by S. Marcus and Gibson-Graham to interpretation of the reaction patterns of the female characters who accept the rapes and tries to overcome their victimized situation. The female characters refuse to remain as victims of the rapes. They disobey the solemn imperatives of sexual impurity based on the patriarchal ideology,and challenge the gender control mechanism. Some of them try to negotiate with patriarchal system, some try to negate it, and some to overcome; most of them follow the way to subjectivity. They are so positive as to inscribe their desires into the raped bodies, and to re-constitute the situation and context from their own understandings, with which they can make some cracks and holes to the male dominant system, where the males can subjectify themselves by victimizing the females.
