佛國寺 大雄殿 《釋氏源流應化事蹟》 壁畵考 (A Study on the 《Seokssiwonryueunghwasajeok》 Wall Paintings in the Dharma Hall of the Bulguk-sa Temple)

The Dharma Hall of the Bulguk-sa Temple was reconstructed in 1765, and was painted in 1767. Inside the Dharma Hall are a number of wall paintings extant that are estimated to have been created during the reconstruction of the hall. Among them, the 《Seokssiwonryueunghwasajeok》 Wall Paintings, consisting of 27 pieces of 26 kinds depicting the lives of Shakyamuni and his dharma disciples, attract people’s eyes. 《Seokssiwonryueunghwasajeok》 was imported to Korea through Japan and China in the 17th century and printed at the Bulam-sa Temple in 1673 and at the Seonwoon-sa Temple in 1710, and as shown in the Dharma Hall of the Bulguk-sa Temple, it is believed to have become popular as it was created as wall paintings. Wall paintings on the theme of this book are found not only in the Dharma Hall of the Bulguk-sa Temple but also in the Yeongsan Hall of the Tongdo-sa Temple and the Yeongsan Hall of the Seonwoon-sa Temple, but those in the Dharma Hall of the Bulguk-sa Temple are most remarkable because they show various ancient monks. The 《Seokssiwonryueunghwasajeok》 Wall Paintings in the Dharma Hall of the Bulguk-sa Temple were drawn because the book granted by Queen Inhyeon (仁顯王后), the wife of King Sukjong, in 1681 was kept in the temple. Thus, it is believed that the wall paintings were created based on the book through the painting project in 1767 after the reconstruction of the Dharma Hall in 1765. These wall paintings are also meaningful in that they were painted by Hayoon, the monk painter of the Tongdo-sa Temple representing the 18th century and his disciples, and reflect the style of Buddhist paintings in the Yeongnam region.
