에릭 사티의 <벡사시옹> 해석: 실존적 반복 개념을 중심으로 (A New Interpretation of Erik Satie’s : With a Focus on the Conception of Existential Repetition)

초록

에릭 사티(Erik Satie, 1866-1925)가 1893년 작곡한 <벡사시옹>(Vexations)은 단선율로 이루어진 주제와 그 선율에 화성을 입힌 두 개의 변주가 이어지는 짧은 곡이다. 이 곡이 현재까지 회자되는 이유는 곡이 가진 화성학적 특이함에 기인한다기보다는 악보에 작곡가 본인이 직접 기입한 텍스트 때문일 것이다. 사티의 <벡사시옹>을 이해하기 위한 현재까지의 시도는 크게 역사적 해석과 ‘구조적 해석’으로 나눠볼 수 있다. 역사적 해석은 해당 시기 사티의 행적을 중심으로 곡의 특징을 서술하는 방식의 해석이다. 사티는 <벡사시옹>을 작곡할 무렵 중세의 종교와 예술에 심취해있었고, 당시 작곡한 곡들에서 그 흔적들을 일부 발견할 수 있다. 따라서 역사적 해석을 지지하는 사람들은 사티가 중세로부터 받은 영향을 기준으로 곡을 해석해왔다. 반면 구조적 해석은 작곡가 존 케이지(John Cage, 1912-1992)로부터 시작된 해석으로, 사티를 음악의 구조 자체에 새로운 변화를 불러온 개척자로평가한다. 두 가지 해석의 가능성에도 불구하고 여전히 해결되지 않은 문제는 제목인 ‘Vexations’과 곡의 내용 간의 관계이다. 역사적 해석의 지지자들은 이 문제에 관심을 가지지 않는다. <벡사시옹>이 비슷한 시기 작곡된 사티의 다른 곡들과 큰 차이를 보이지 않기 때문이다. 구조적 해석 또한 <벡사시옹>의 반복이 행복감을 의도한 것이라고 해석하면서 제목과 내용의 일관성을 유지하지 못한다. 위와 같은 문제를 고찰하기 위해 본 논문에서는 키에르케고어(Søren Kierkegaard, 1813-1855)와 카뮈(Albert Camus, 1913-1960)의 저작에서 발견할 수 있는 ‘실존적 반복’ 개념을 도입하고자 한다. 실존적 반복은 일상적으로 사용하는 반복 개념과 달리 인간의 운명과 그것의 장악 가능성과 관련된 실존주의적인 개념이다. 그리고 키에르케고어의 반복 에 등장하는 청년과 시지프 신화 에 등장하는 시지프를 <벡사시옹>의 반복자와 유비해 볼 것이다. 만약 유비를 통해 감정적으로 ‘짜증’의 상태에 있는 반복자를 발견할 수 있다면 <벡사시옹>의 제목과 내용 간의 일관성을 지켜주는 해석을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Composed in 1893 by Erik Satie (1866-1925), Vexations is a short piece consisting of a monophonic theme and two variations of added harmony. This piece’s popularity to this day is probably attributed to text the composer himself wrote in the score rather than the harmonious peculiarity of the piece. The attempts to understand Satie’s Vexations can be largely divided into historical interpretation and ‘structural interpretation’. Historical interpretation describes the characteristics of the piece, centering on the actions of Satie in the period. By the time he wrote Vexations, he was deeply interested in medieval religion and art. Supporters of the historical interpretation explain the work based on the influence Satie had received from medieval thought. The structural interpretation, which began with the composer John Cage (1912-1992), evaluates Satie as a pioneer who brought new changes to the structure of music itself. Though both interpretations have attempted to illuminate the feature, the relationship between the title and the content of the piece still remains unclear. The historical interpretation did not pay attention to this problem, because Vexations does not show much difference in techniques from other Satie’s pieces composed in the same period. The structural interpretation argues that the repetition in Vexations is intended for a sense of happiness, therefore it also fails to adequately explain the consistency of the title and content. Regarding this problem, this paper attempts to introduce the concept of ‘existential repetition’ found in the writings of Søren Kierkegaard(1813-1855) and Albert Camus (1913-1960). Unlike the concept of repetition used in everyday life, the existential repetition is an existentialist concept related to human fate and its potential control. This paper compares the young man in Kierkegaard’s Repetition and Sisyphus in The Myth of Sisyphus with the iterator of Vexations. Finding the iterator who is emotionally in a state of ‘vexation’ can suggest a way by which we can keep the consistency between the title and content of Vexations.
