융의 콤플렉스론으로 읽는 안톤 체홉의 《벚꽃동산》 (Analysis of Anton Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard” by Jungian Complex Theory)

초록

희곡의 등장인물은 극작가에 의해 의도적으로 몇 가지 특징과 속성만이 집중적으로 보이게끔 창조되어 예측이 가능한 경우가 많은데, 체홉의 인물들은 지극히 평범한 인물들로서 객관적으로 그려져 있고, 의지와 욕망, 사고와 감정을 복합적으로 지닌 인물들로 감정적, 정신적 약점을 드러낸다. 인물들은 모순덩어리들로서 겉으로 드러나지 않는 비밀스러운 내면의 움직임이 외적인 행동을 만들어내므로, 배우는 드러나지 않는 비밀 안에 아주 강력하게 자리 잡고 있어야 내면의 움직임이 생기고, 그 내면으로부터 역동적으로 연기할 수 있다.
극작가에 의해 창조된 인물이 행동을 통해서 의도와 목적이 분명하고 일관되게 드러난다면 인물의 성격과 행동을 분석하여 연출하거나 연기하는 것이 수월하겠지만, 체홉 희곡의 경우, 등장인물의 대사 분석에서 인물의 전기에 켜켜이 숨겨진 심리적 행적을 밝혀내지 못하고 표면적인 의미만을 따라 연기했다가는 인물의 비밀스러운 내적인 움직임을 간과한 채 의식적 행동만으로 연기할 우려가 있다. 따라서 체홉의 희곡을 연기하기 위해서는 각 인물의 의식과 무의식 모두에 내재한 인물의 내적인 움직임과 그 내적인 움직임의 비밀을 밝혀내는 일이 우선되어야 한다.
이에 안톤 체홉이 희곡 《벚꽃동산》에서 주제를 드러내는 방식과 등장인물들의 성격과 내적인 움직임에 감춰진 비밀을 밝히는 것이 희곡의 연출적인 면에서나 배우의 연기에 있어서 비밀의 열쇠로 판단하고, 이를 밝혀낼 수 있는 분석도구로 융의 콤플렉스론을 적용하였다. 융의 콤플렉스론을 적용하여 안톤 체홉의 희곡 《벚꽃동산》에 창조해놓은 인물들의 성격과 내적인 움직임에 감춰진 비밀을 찾아내고, 그 비밀이 주제를 드러내는 플롯으로 기능하고 있음까지 고찰하였다. 연구 결과 등장인물을 괴롭히는 콤플렉스로 네 가지를 도출하였는데, 각 콤플렉스를 어린이 콤플렉스, 유기 콤플렉스, 잉여 콤플렉스, 신분 콤플렉스라고 명명하였다.
연출가와 배우의 텍스트인 희곡을 분석하면 《벚꽃동산》에 관한 콤플렉스 분석에서 나타나듯이 콤플렉스가 인물의 성격과 행동에 끼치는 영향이 너무나 크고, 인물에 따라서는 콤플렉스에 지배된 성격과 행동으로 점철된 등장인물도 발견할 수가 있다. 따라서 연출가와 배우는 의식에서 자신의 신체와 심리를 다루는 것에 더하여 무의식, 특히 콤플렉스가 성격 형성과 자아의 행동을 지배하는 현상 등에 이르기까지 이해를 넓힐 필요가 있다.

영어초록

Characters in a play are often predictable because they are intentionally created by the playwright to emphasize only a few characteristics and attributes, but Chekhov's characters are objectively created as ordinary people, with a complexity of wills, desires, thoughts and feelings that reveal emotional and mental weaknesses. The characters are a mass of contradictions, whose secret inner movements create their outer behavior, so the actor must be very strongly grounded in the secret inner movements in order to generate them and act dynamically from them.
If the characters created by the playwright clearly and consistently reveal their intentions and purposes through their actions, it would be easy to direct or act by analyzing their personalities and behaviors, but in the case of Chekhov's plays, if we analyze the characters' dialogues and turn on the characters' biographies to reveal their hidden psychological trajectories and act only according to the surface meaning, we may overlook the characters' secret inner movements and act only consciously. Therefore, in order to perform Chekhov's plays, the first step is to uncover the secret of the characters' inner movements and their inner movements, which are inherent in both the conscious and unconscious minds of each character.
Therefore, we applied Jung's complex theory as an analytical tool to determine how Anton Chekhov reveals the themes in his play "The Cherry Orchard" and how revealing the secrets hidden in the characters' personalities and inner movements is the key to the play's directorial aspect and the actors' performance. By applying Jung's complex theory, we found the secrets hidden in the characters' personalities and inner movements in Anton Chekhov's play "The Cherry Orchard" and examined how the secrets function as a plot to reveal the theme. As a result of my research, I identified four complexes that plague the characters, which I named the child complex, the abandonment complex, the surplus complex, and the status complex.
When we analyze plays, which are texts for directors and actors, we find that the influence of complexes on characters' personalities and behaviors is so great that some characters are dominated by complexes, as shown in the analysis of complexes in "The Cherry Orchard". Therefore, directors and actors need to expand their understanding beyond dealing with their conscious minds and bodies to include the unconscious, especially the ways in which complexes dominate personality formation and the behavior of the self.
