型式學的屬性分析法의 理解 (Understanding the Typological Attributes Analysis method)

초록

본 논문은 형식학적속성분석법에 대한 비판에 대한 반박과 이해를 돕고자 작성되었다. 형식학적속성분석법은 형식학과 속성분석법을 결합한 편년연구방법으로서, 유사한 용례는 岡村秀典(1993)의중국 한경 편년이 있다. 형식학적속성분석법을 비판한 것은 이 방법이 잘못 사용된 논문에 근거한것으로서 타당한 지적도 있지만, 대부분은 몬테리우스의 형식학에 대한 잘못된 인식과 오해에서 비롯된 것임을 기술하였다.
형식학은 가설이라는 두 계열의 형식조열을, 동시성이라는 역사적 사실이 내포된 일괄유물의 검증을 통하여 평행관계를 밝힘으로써 비로소 형식조열이 시간의 순서임을 증명해 보인 것이다. 형식학적속성분석법은 형식학의 형식을 속성단위로 치환하여, 1 개체에 내재한 속성들의 동시성을 검증도구로 삼은 것이고, 그 분석은 속성분석법의 상관성을 밝히는 방법을 응용한 것이다.
본고에서는 「고고학=분류학」이라는 입장에서 고고자료의 계통적 기능적 형태적 분류를 통한 기종의 엄중성을 강조하였다. 기종 내의 속성계열을 방향성에 따른 객관적이고 체계화된 분류와 형식의계기적인 연속성을 속성분석에서 중시하였다. 궁극적으로는 최소단위의 시간대로 상대편년을 완성하여, 분류체계와 그 결과의 공유를 목적으로 삼았다.

영어초록

This article is written as a response to Doo Chul Kim’s critique of Typological Attributes Analysis method. Typological Attributes Analysis is a method of chronology which conjoins Typology and Attribute Analysis. Hideo Okamura’s chronology of Chines bronze mirrors in Han dynasty could be considered one of the example of its application (Okamura, 1993).
Given that Professor Kim’s critiques are brought up regarding my previous research which misapplied the method, some aspects of his critique might sound reasonable. However, I argue in this article that most of his counterarguments are rooted in misconceptions and misunderstandings of Typology given by Montelius.
The Typology aims to demonstrate that two hypothesized series are indeed aligned chronologically by investigating a synchronism nested as a historical fact in the artifacts from two series; which exposes a parallelism existing between two series. The Typological Attributes Analysis method splits types in the Typology into attribute units then uses these attributes nested in an artifact as a tool for the investigation of chronology; in which the Attributes Analysis’ method of revealing relevance between attributes is appropriated.
Based on a stance that “Archaeology=Taxonomy,” this article emphasizes the exactitude in the types of earthenware which could be inferred from the classification of archaeological data according to their serial, functional, and morphic features. In the attribute analysis, it is also emphasized the importance of objective and systemic typology of earthenware according to the orientation implied in series and the continuity within a series. Ultimately, by providing a completed chronology of artifacts aligned by minimum time units, this article aims to share a system of classification and the outputs of it.
