A Dialectical Approach to Preaching as Confession: For a Homiletic Seeking Truthfulness

초록

The purpose of this article is to explore the homiletical significance of confession for a diversified and de-centered postmodern era. Since the introduction of new homiletical perspectives, various theological attempts have been made to achieve a “truthfulness” in which gospel and faith are concretely embodied. The possibilities and significance of those approaches have been noted, but further homiletical work is required to meet the diverse contexts of life.
To this end, the first part of this article explores the homiletic of David J. Lose, which provides a theological foundation for “preaching as confession.” This exploration takes the form of a dialectical dialogue between the postliberal homiletic of Charles Campbell and the conversational homiletic of Lucy Rose. The second part of the article argues biblically and theologically that a rhetorical confessional homiletic embraces the emphases of both postliberal and conversational homiletics. In the last section of this article, Lose’s confessional homiletic is examined for its significance and insights. A confessional homiletic is employed within a theoretical framework that puts both the declarations in the Bible and hearers’ responses into a greater vessel of “confession.” In particular, it is noted that confession helps restore the communality of preaching and allows preachers to make a proper reflection on excessive individualism and relativism concerning the gospel.
This study seeks to provide an opportunity for the homiletical and theoretical insights from “confession” to be implanted in the Korean church that preachers might employ a confessional homiletic for the proclamation of gospel and responses to the gospel.
