대승불교의 윤리이론이 지닌 정형적 형식에 대한 고찰－법성종(法性宗)에 대한 해석을 중심으로－ (A Study on the Stereotyped Formality of the Ethical Theory of Mahayana Buddhism: With a Focus on the Interpretation of Beopseongjong (法性宗))

초록

불교의 이념은 그것이 지향하는 궁극적인 목표에서뿐만 아니라그것의 논의를 구성하는 주요한 개념적 요소들에서까지 윤리적인 문제의영역을 경유하고 있다. 그러나 그것이 지닌 오랜 역사는 윤리학적 논의의구조와 개념의 용법을 지나치게 다양화시켰고, 그로 말미암아 윤리적 판단이 요구되는 구체적인 사안들에 있어 일관성 있는 해답의 제시가 어려워지게 되었다.
본고에서는 이와 같은 상황의 해소를 위해 불교의 이념, 특히 그 안에서도 ‘법성종(法性宗)’의 영역에서 발견되는 윤리학적 논의의 구조를 정형화된 형태로써 도출해내고자 했다. 법성종이 지닌 윤리이론의 정형화된 구조는 객관적인 동시에 보편적인 성격을 지닌 내적 요소로서의 ‘원각(圓覺)’혹은 ‘진여(眞如)’에 그 근간을 둠으로서 마련된다. 바로 이 원각 내지는진여의 개념이 도덕적 판단을 수행하는 자에게 ‘현상에 대한 사실판단’ 및‘도덕적 가치판단’의 객관적 기준을 제시함으로써 도덕적 행위를 위한 토대를 구성한다.
도덕적 판단이 구체적인 행위로 이어지기 위해서는 그 둘을 이어줄 매개적 개념이 필요하다. 법성종에서는 원각 내지는 진여라는 최상의 도덕 원리로부터 필연적으로 발현되는 도덕적 감정인 ‘대비심(大悲心)’으로서 그러한 간극을 특징적으로 해소한다. 대비심은 원각 내지는 진여에 의해 도출된 ‘현상에 대한 사실적 이해’에 그 발현 근거를 두는 것으로 설명된다.
그리고 나아가 구체적인 행위를 위한 ‘의지’의 개념에 해당하는 ‘서원(誓願)’을 일으키는 계기가 된다. 도덕적 원리에서부터 도덕적 판단 및 행위를관통하는 이상의 필연적 관계는, 법성종의 이론구조와 체계상의 유사성을지닌 칸트철학과의 부분적인 대조를 통해 그 특징적인 면모를 밝히는 방면으로 수행되었다.
본고에서는 이렇게 도출된 이론적 구조에 철학적 재해석을 가함으로써보다 정형화된 형태의 윤리이론을 도출해내고자 했다. 이 과정에서 ‘고통’의 문제가 전면으로 등장함으로써, 법성종의 윤리이론이 지향하는 대상의범위가 ‘고통 받는 중생’으로 압축되고 그것의 철학적 입장과 의미가 보다분명하게 밝혀지게 된다.

영어초록

Buddhist doctrine covers ethical issues not only through its ultimate goal it pursues but also through its main conceptual elements consisting of its argument. Yet, in its long history, the structure of its ethical discussion and the use of its concepts have been diversified far too much; thus, it has become difficult to suggest consistent answers for specific cases demanding ethical judgment. In order to solve this problem, this research aims at deducing the structure of ethical argument found in Buddhist ideas, Beopseongjong(法性宗) in particular,with stereotyped formality. The stereotypical structure of the ethical theory of Beopseongjong is based on ‘perfect enlightenment(圓覺)’, or ‘Tathata(眞如)’, as the intrinsic element which is universal as well as objective. These very concepts of perfect enlightenment, or Tathata,always offer the objective standard of the ‘judgment of the truth of the existing state’ and ‘ethical value judgment’ to the person training in ethical judgment and form the foundation for ethical actions. For ethical judgment to be led to a specific action, an intermediate concept is necessary to connect the two. In Beopseongjong, the ‘ultimate mind of enlightenment (大悲心),’ the ethical emotion inevitably manifested from the highest ethical principles of the perfect enlightenment, or Tathata,fills in the gap distinctively. The ultimate mind of enlightenment is explained as originating from a ‘realistic understanding of the status quo’ deduced from the perfect enlightenment, or Tathata. And,furthermore, it becomes the opportunity to generate ‘Pranidhana (誓願),’the concept of ‘will’ for a specific action. The characteristics of the inevitable relation above penetrating from the ethical principles to ethical judgment and actions were investigated through a partial contrast to Kant's philosophy, which has a similar theoretical structure and system to those of Beopseongjong. In this thesis, the deduced theoretical structure was philosophically reinterpreted so that the ethical theory of a more stereotyped formality was to be deduced. As the problem of ‘suffering’ appeared all over the surface in this process, the range of the objects that the ethical theory of Beopseongjong seeks was compressed into ‘the suffering mankind,’ and its philosophical standpoint and meanings became clearer.
