초록

본고는 15세기 왕실발원 범종과 16세기 민간발원의 범종을 포함한 조선전기(朝鮮前期) 범종의 양식 변천에 대한 고찰이다. 조선전기 범종의 현황에서 15세기에는 왕실발원 범종이 압도적으로 많은데 이는 당시 많은 왕실 발원의 중창 혹은 개창 불사와 동시에 범종이 많이 제작된 것에 기인한다. 16세기 범종의 발원자 계층은 민간이 주를 이루는데 이미 16세기에는 유교적 지배질서가 고착화 된 상황에서 범종의 제작에 왕실이 전면에 나서서 발원할 수 없었기 때문이다. 15세기 왕실발원 범종은 중국범종의 요소를 수용하는데, 그 원인을 원(元)의 영향, 장인세력의 약화, 명(明)과의 교섭관계 등에서 이루어졌다. 특히 15세기 왕실발원 범종은 조선왕조의 의례와 규범이 체계화 되던 시점과 맞물려 왕실, 승려, 장인집단 등이 체계적으로 참여하였음을 명문과 사료를 통해 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 범종의 조형에도 관음신앙(觀音信仰)의 유행을 반영하고 있음을 육자진언(六字眞言), 관음보살상(觀音菩薩像), 명문(銘文) 등을 통하여 밝혔다. 16세기 민간발원의 범종은 기존의 15세기 왕실발원 범종에 비해 상대적으로 빈약한 장인세력, 경제적 지원 등으로 인하여 중소형의 작은 크기이다. 이 시기 범종은 기본적으로 전통 범종의 양식을 따르면서 15세기 수용된 중국종의 요소도 보이는데, 그 외래요소의 자국화 경향 역시 뚜렷이 엿 볼 수 있다. 또한 16세기 범종은 15세기 범종과는 크기, 문양 등 외형적인 차이는 있지만 조형성에서는 한국종의 전통적인 미감에 꾸준히 접근하려는 표현의지는 동일하였다는 점을 강조하고 싶다.
본 연구에서는 기존에 이 시기 중국종 요소의 수용에 대해 형식적인 면만을 다루었던 점에서 좀 더 세부적인 분석을 통해 구체적인 양식규명을 시도하였다. 15세기 왕실발원 범종은 시각적으로 중국종의 과장되고 위압적인 모습과는 달리 균형감 있게 안정적으로 표현되었으며, 당시 유행한 관음신앙의 실천형태로서 육자진언과 관음보살입상, 파도문 등을 문양의 모티프로 표현했음을 알 수 있었다. 문양의 시문에 있어서도 요철(凹凸)이 두드러지지 않는 전통 한국 범종의 표현 방식을 추구하여, 중국종의 요소를 수용함에도 중국종과 다른 조형성을 보이는 원인에 대해 새롭게 밝힐 수 있었다. 이 후 16세기 민간발원 범종들이 전통범종의 형태를 추구하면서도 중국종의 요소와 15세기 새롭게 등장한 문양들을 어떻게 계승하여 표현하였는가에 대해 살폈다. 이를 통해 기존에 15세기를 한중혼합양식의 시기, 16세기를 복고적인 양식의 시기로 규정하던 다소 분리된 시각에서 벗어나 발원계층의 차이에서 오는 크기나 작품의 격에는 차이가 나지만, 공통적으로 나타나는 전통 한국 범종의 미감은 꾸준히 작품에서 추구된다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 더불어 15-16세기 범종의 분석을 통해 17-18세기의 승장계(僧匠係) 및 사장계(私匠係) 장인들의 활발한 주종활동으로 제작된 많은 수의 조선 후기 범종의 양식을 규명하는데 있어서 새로운 연결고리를 제시했다는 점에 본 연구의 의의를 두고 싶다.

영어초록

During the 15th century, Buddhist temple bells were cast in Joseon mostly under projects sponsored by the royal household. In the early years of this dynasty, the royal house was actively involved in the restoration of ancient Buddhist edifices, and many of the temple bells from this period were made as part of these projects. However, once into the 16th century, during which Joseon embraced a Confucian social order, its rulers ceased to be the patrons of Buddhism, this role being now passed on to the populace, in other words the lower social classes.

Buddhist temple bells from the 15th century exhibit a strong Chinese influence. The cultural sway of the Yuan Dynasty still unabated, Joseon had a relationship of live exchange with the Ming around this time. The weakening of the local industrial base also played a role in this phenomenon. According to both information found on the body of the bell and other sources, royal house-financed temple bell projects from this period enlisted the help of various stakeholders, ranging from members of the royal family and government officials to monks and artisans. These bells echo the cult of Kuan-yin, popular around this time. Six-character Dharani and images of Kuan-yin are frequently found sculpted on their surface, along with other inscriptions making reference to the same Buddhist goddess.

Privately-financed temple bells from the 16th century, meanwhile, are smaller in size than those from the preceding century, cast from generous royal funding. This was also a result of the continuous decline, as an industry, of casting arts and crafts. Temple bells from this period manifest stronger native stylistic elements, as the Chinese influence from the 15th century gradually became integrated with local aesthetics. Although more modest in scale than those produced in the previous century, 16th-century Joseon temple bells are artistically more interesting, being faithful reflections of the Korean tradition.

Compared to their Chinese counterparts, 15th-centry Joseon temple bells are more balanced and harmonious, conveying less of the exaggerated and massive impression that characterizes the latter. The surface, bearing the inscription of six-character Dharani, is frequently decorated with images of Kuan-yin and wave designs. True to the Korean temple bell tradition, surface designs are most often only slightly embossed. These local characteristics, therefore, existed side-by-side with Chinese-influenced elements, giving them a unique native stamp to 15th-century Joseon bells.

Privately-financed temple bells from the subsequent century show attempts to marry Chinese-imported elements and new ornamental motifs introduced during the 15th century with the older stylistic heritage of Korea. This study challenges the previous view in which the 15th century is considered a stylistically hybrid period, blending the Korean and Chinese styles, and the 16th century, a throwback period harking back to an older style. It presents arguments why these two periods should rather be understood as two chapters of Korean bell-making, linked by an uninterrupted continuity. The new light this study sheds on the stylistic evolution of Buddhist temple bells of the 15th-16th centuries also offers a fresh perspective on their successors from the 17th-18th centuries, which was a vibrant period of Korean bell-making, thanks to prolific production by both monks and lay artisans.
