    Aesthetic Features of the Directing in the Creative Course of Dramatization of the Novel《Crime and Punishment》: From Image to Drama Ra Jin-Hwan

    Purpose of this thesis is to explain the aesthetic features of the directing in the discourse of inner creation in the creative process of dramatizing Dostoyevsky's novel《Crime and Punishment》through Ethnosenology, which is an approach of performance studies. As is generally known, inner discourse of creation means 'empirical knowledge system'. In other words, purpose of this thesis is to study features of inner creation course of drama《Crime and Punishment》. The writer has already introduced features of my directing method through previous two thesis, and this paper can be seen as being in their extension line.
    《Crime and Punishment》reveals features of the current directing aesthetics and features of this work are the 'image serving the drama'. The writer's aesthetic features in the previous work,《The Possessed》were 'the drama serving the image'. That is, drama is progressed through development of image and narrative is the minimum explanation providing the minimum basis for the image development and doing the role of subtitles. Therefore, structure of narrative in《The Possessed》was completely combined with the image structure by means of the method of development and combination.
    However, on the contrary, in this time's Dostoyevsky's《Crime and Punishment》, focus of the drama moves to the performance where 'image serves the drama'. Image works as another way of aesthetic device explaining the meaning and emotion of narrating situation directively. In other words, image is incorporated into the narrative structure in the way of extending the meaning of plot.
    As such, in the development of a story emphasizing on narrative, by using the image made by the symbol emphasizing such situation and meaning, meaning of the words is extended. Such image extends meaning on the basis of 'stable' understanding of the audience and provides the image of another symbol that can transform the meaning into different one.
    To the writer, dramatization of novel is incorporated as one of the directing courses. Therefore, the first dramatization has the meaning of 'pre-script' before becoming a script. It is a structure of the events of the play in order to become a script and a directing structure of the play. Such pre-script takes the course toward completion through collaboration with actors. That is, it is 'a text being in the direction of completed script by starting from unfinished script.
    In this work, the writer suggests the start of basic space, the space showing Raseukolrinikopeu‘s ontological status as the main space of crisis emphasizing 'the boundary'. Such spaces are both aisles and boundaries where we cannot but feel anxiety and crisis. In such space, various symbols appear and disappear according to the narrative structure In directing the theater dance, features of combination of images and narrative in this work are the image serving the drama. Eventually, whether image serves the drama as in the case of this work or drama serves the image as in《The Possessed》, the ultimate goal of the image being created by symbols is to amplify the cognitive function of audiences' 'sense of body'.
