초록

Every character in Crime and Punishment goes through their own intense and desperate time. In every hour, minute, and second, what they choose is a life of anxiety and suffering. While being aware of the continuity and flow of time, they agonize over the earthly structure of time bound to the beginning and end of life and keep mindful of the relations between past and present and present and future.
The time that the characters experience is closely connected with self-consciousness and self. In the constant flow of time and the changing conditions of life, they strive to find the fundamental identity of self as well as the essence of self that is never contaminated but preserved forever within the destruction of time. In the story, Dostoyevsky suggests one principle to characters who try to overcome time, establish self, and find the nature of self. It is the principle of unity and bond in human community. The author is precautious about the possibility that when each individual is free to keep his/her personality and self, the freedom can victimize others and even destroy and deviate the unity and bond from community.
