초록

본 연구는 라흐마니노프(S. Rachmaninoff)의 피아노소나타 제2번(op.36) 개정판의 1악장에 나타나는 색채적 음향에 관한 것이다. 라흐마니노프는 20세기에 활동했었던 작곡가임에도 불구하고 당시 유행하던 모더니즘의 조류를 따르지 않고 19세기 낭만주의의 음악양식을 고수한 작곡가로 알려져 있다. 하지만 필자는 라흐마니노프가 당시의 모더니즘의 조류에서 벗어나 낭만주의 전통을 고수하고 있었다 할지라도 당시의 음악적인 조류의 영향을 전혀 받지 않았다고는 생각하지 않는다. 필자가 라흐마니노프 피아노소나타 2번에서 주목하는 부분은 많은 연구들로부터 배제되어있는 색채적 음향이다. 20세기 초의 새로운 음악들에 사용된 음악구성의 재료들 중에서 눈에 띄게 나타나는 특징은 음색이라는 요소의 부상(浮上)이다. 모더니즘을 이끌고 색채적 음향에 관심을 가진 작곡가들의 음악과 비교하여 색채적 음향을 만들어내는 방법에 차이는 있을지라도 라흐마니노프는 당시의 모더니즘 조류를 따르는 음악들로부터 영향 받은 기법들과 자신만의 다양한 음색을 표현하는 기법들을 적용함으로서 이 음악에서 색채적 음향을 분명히 강조하고 있는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 이 음악에서 색채적 음향이 가장 강조된 부분은 이 음악 전체의 절정부분인 발전부의 종결부에 있는 교회종소리를 표현한 부분이다. 제시부와 발전부에 사용된 음악적 세포들은 이 교회종소리를 구성하는 음형들의 뿌리이며 결국 그 세포들이 만드는 다양한 변형들의 결과가 교회종소리로 표현된 것이다. 음악적 세포들이 어떤 음형으로 변형되고 그것에 따른 음향적 변화들이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 그것의 결과물인 교회종소리음향을 만들어 내는지 그것을 면밀하게 추적하는 것이 이 연구의 핵심이다. 또한 화성적 변화와 음형으로부터 표현되는 음색의 변화도 다루어진다. 본 연구를 통하여 색채적 음향의 연구에서 주목을 받지 못했던 라흐마니노프의 음악에 대해 새로운 시각을 심어주는 계기가 되길 바란다.

영어초록

This study focuses on colored sonority in the revised version of Rachmaninoff's Piano Sonata No.2, op.36, 1st movement. Rachmaninoff had been one of the prominent composers in 20th century. But he is acknowledged not to join the trend of Modernism, sticking to the Romanticism of the 19th century in the musical style. However, I don't think that he was not affected by the trend of the contemporary music, even though he embraced the traditional Romanticism apart from the wave of Modernism.
I pay attention to the colored sonority in Rachmaninoff's Piano Sonata No.2 because it has been excluded from the major researches. The concept of timbre surfaced as one of the most outstanding among the elements which consisted of the new genre of music in the early 20th century. Comparing with the music of the composers who were interested in the colored sonority leading the trend of the Modernism, there were some differences in his methodology to extract the colored sonority. But he applied his unique methods to express a variety of timbre on the basis of the methods from the wave of Modernism at that time. It means that he clearly emphasized on the colored sonority in this piece.
The most outstanding part of the music that the colored sonority is emphasized is the sound of church bells in the part of the conclusion of the development section that constructs the peak of the entire music. The music cells used in exposition and development sections are the origins of the sound that compose of the church bell sound. The result of these different variations of the cells brings the church bell sound. The key of this study is the close observation and analysis on how these music cells were transformed into the sound shapes through a certain process to the church bell sound in the perspective of the colored sonority. Also, this study deals with the change of the timbre which comes from the harmonistic variation and figurations. Hopefully, this study can be an opportunity to open a different perspective on the music of Rachmaninoff which wasn't so appealing in the research of the colored sonority.
