초록

우리의 유교경전 언해史는 口訣과 釋義를 거쳐 조선 선조조 교정청의 경서언해 사업으로 최종 일단락되었다. 선조 18∼21년 교정청은 音讀ㆍ吐ㆍ釋文을 다 갖춘 완전한 언해의 형태로 사서삼경언해와 『소학언해』를 편찬하였다. 조선의 儒經언해는 곧 성리학의 이론적 발달과 궤를 같이 하기에, 경서언해서는 기본적으로 번역서이자 사상서다. 따라서 교정청이 언해사업을 성공시킬 수 있었던 능력은 바로 우리의 오랜 언해 경험 및 16c 후반 성리학의 사상적 성숙에서 확보된 것이다.
16c 경서언해의 시대적 과제는 첫째, 朱註에 따라 經文을 해석함으로써 성리학으로의 사상적 귀결을 추구하는 것이고, 둘째, 多岐한 諸說을 수렴하여 사회 전반에 공히 인정받는 단일한 定本을 마련하는 것이었다. 교정청본 경서언해서의 편찬 목적은 바로 이러한 16c 후반의 시대적 과제와 동일하다.
교정청의 경서언해는 수십 명의 학자들이 동원된 공동번역이었으며, 작업방식은 텍스트의 중요성에 따라 『소학』과 사서가 삼경보다 먼저 언해되고, 또 일정 정도는 텍스트별 분업이 이루어진 것으로 보인다. 번역의 원칙은 명시되지 않았지만, 경서언해서의 형식과 내용을 일별하면 내재된 번역 원칙도 일견 유추할 수 있다.
교정청본 사서삼경언해의 형식에 있어서는 주석 없이 經文을 절반 이상 沿用하여 逐字로 直譯했다는 점이 번역학적으로 가장 주목되는 특징이다. 축자 직역과 경문 연용은 원전의 본뜻을 훼손할 위험을 최소화하는 장점이 있다. 내용에 있어서는 존대법 구사에 다양한 원칙이 존재했다는 점과 文勢의 정합성을 추구하여 定本의 객관적 신뢰를 담보하고자 애썼다는 점이 번역학적으로 특히 주목된다.

영어초록

Historically, Korean annotation of Confucian classics developed from the era of 'Gugeyol' to that of 'Seokeui', and finally ended up in Gyojeongcheong's Korean annotation project of those classics during the reign of King Seonjo.
Such Korean annotation was in line with the theoretical development of Sung-Confucianism. Thus, Korean-language annotated books of Confucian classics are basically translated publications as well as works of literature on thoughts. In a similar vein, underlying Gyojeongcheong's success in Korean annotation of those classics during the 18th to 21st year of King Seonjo's reign was the fact that by the late 16th century, Joseon already had a long accumulated experience of such translation in Korean and was in the maturation state of Neo-Confucianism.
During the 16th century, the Korean annotation of Confucian classics had two ultimate goals of the times, ①seeking an ideological convergence into Zhu-zi's Neo-Confucianism by interpreting original scriptures of the classics with reference to the Chinese thinker's footnotes and ②accomplishing a publicly recognized original copy by compromising different interpretations that were already available. These goals, set up in the late 16h century, were in exactly consistent with objectives for which Gyojeongcheong published Korean- language annotated books of Confucian classics.
Gyojeongcheong's Korean annotation of Confucian classics was a collective project performed by dozens of scholars. Principles of translation under the project still remains unclear, but somewhat presumable by inspecting in terms of form and content the annotated classics that the governmental agency actually put out.
When it comes to form, Gyojeongcheong's annotated versions of the Four Books and the Three Classics or Saseosamgyeong include more than a half of Chinese letters or characters as they are which were written in original scriptures of Saseosamgyeong. In other words, those versions employed the method of verbal literal translation. This deserves most noticeable from the perspective of translation studies The reason why Gyojeongcheong used that method was to minimize possible meaning distortions of the original scriptures as mentioned above. As far as content is concerned, it is quite noteworthy from the same perspective that the annotations by Gyojeongcheong applied the honorific system in a diverse fashion and pursued coordination of contexts.
