제4의 공간과 전시스토리텔링- ‘사이버 안동읍성’ 복원콘텐츠 사례를 중심으로 - (The 4th Space and Exhibition Story-telling)

초록

본고는 4대 공간(물리공간-전자공간-유비쿼터스공간-사용자경험공간)을 융합하며 발전해 온 디지털박물관의 오브제인 ‘문화유산’의 디지털콘텐츠화 과정을 살펴보고 사례를 통하여 적용가능성을 살펴보는 글이다. 널리 알려진 대로 문화유산은 보편 문화원형인 동시에 민족의 특수 문화유산이기도 하다. 최근 전통문화를소재로 한 문화유산 복원콘텐츠가 붐을 이루면서 문화유산은 문화콘텐츠산업에소재와 이야기뿐만 아니라 좋은 배경을 제공하는 무궁무진한 문화자원으로 새롭게주목받게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 현재의 문화유산은 보존정책에만 묶여 있어서 제대로 활용되어 콘텐츠화 하는 데에 많은 어려움을 겪고 있다.
문화유산의 디지털콘텐츠화 과정은 다음과 같다. 그동안 널리 발굴, 연구된 문화유산 관련 지식정보를 디지털화하고, 체계적으로 분류, 집적, 검색할 수 있도록아카이브로 구축한 다음, 인문-사회-예술학적 지식정보를 활용하여 원형 디지털복원하는 과정을 거친다. 그리고 최종적으로 다양한 체험콘텐츠로 개발되어 타임머신 여행을 하는듯한 체험, 즉 4대공간 융합 체험 단계에 이르게 된다. 이 과정에서 그동안 디지털기술에만 만족하였던 단계를 넘어서 유형문화유산에 담겨져 있는환상적인 이야기와 메시지를 요구하는 단계로 진화하게 되었다.
18세기 안동읍성의 디지털복원 사업은 거대한 유적을 유물, 고지도, 사진, 문헌정보를 기반으로 원형을 고증 복원하여 사이버박물관과 실제 박물관에서 체험할수 있는 콘텐츠를 기획 개발한 사례이다. 디지털복원학이 시간여행 콘텐츠를 개발할 수 있는 이론 기반으로써 작용하고 있음을 보여준다.

영어초록

The digital museums have developed by combining different spaces and their objet hasbeen cultural heritage. In this context, this paper elaborates on the process of digitizingcultural heritage and takes an example to examine the possibility of applying the process. Itis widely known that a country’s cultural heritage is a universal cultural archetype and atthe same time, an ethnic group’s special cultural property. Most recently, content ontraditional culture has been generated very actively by means of heritage restoration. Underthese circumstances, the cultural content industry has paid close attention to culturalheritage which serves as a rich repository of story materials and background. Despite this, itis currently very difficult to make the best use of cultural heritage due to the strictpreservation policies.
Meanwhile, this is how cultural heritage is transformed into digital content. At the firststage of “digitizing,” information on cultural heritage that has been collected throughexcavation and research is digitized. At the second stage of “archiving,” the information isarchived so that it can be classified, accumulated and searched for in a systematic manner.
At the third stage of “digital restoring,” the information is digitally restored; knowledge onthe humanities, sociology and art is helpful at this stage. At the final stage of“experiencing,” the digitized information turns into a variety of experience contents, thusenabling users to be in a time machine. Such a process allows content developers not onlyto digitize information on cultural heritage (as they have done so far) but also to tellfantastic stories and messages related to tangible cultural heritage.
A case in point is the digital restoration of the 18th-century walled city of Andong. In theframework of this project, the original form of the huge cultural site has been studied andrestored based on relics, ancient maps, pictures and documents so that visitors of both cyber and real museums can enjoy the content through hands-on experience. This case explainsthat digital restorology serves as a theoretical basis for the development of “time machinecontent.”
