초록

이 논문은 백도기의 소설 『청동의 뱀』에 나타난 문제의식과 성서 모티프의 환유적 구현에 대한 연구다. 백도기는 한국 기독교 문학사에서 대표적인 소설가 가운데 한 사람으로서 기독교를 핵심 문제로 다루었다.
소설 『청동의 뱀』의 주인공은 목회자로 등장하는데 저자인 백도기가 1964년 한국신학대학을 졸업한 후에 한국기독교장로회 소속의 목사였다는 점에서 자기성찰로써 의미를 지닌다. 그리고 소설 속에 나타난 자기성찰은 개인적인 차원에 머무르는 것이 아니라 한국 개신교의 자기 성찰인 동시에 인간 본질에 대한 성찰이 된다. 또한, 소설 속에 나타난 여러 인물에 대한 사실적인 묘사는 한국 사회가 근대화되면서 나타난 사회의 부조리와 인간의 비인간화와 가정의 해체와 같은 문제를 상세히 서술하여 부각한다. 이처럼 『청동의 뱀』은 당시 한국의 현실과 개신교를 충실하게 사실적으로 그려내면서 현실의 문제를 드러내고, 이를 통해 독자들이 성찰을 하도록 이끌고 있다. 소설 『청동의 뱀』 가운데 있는 인물들이 보여주는 서사에는 작가가 지닌 소설가로서의 리얼리즘적 문제의식이 담겨져 있다.
소설 『청동의 뱀』은 무너져가는 한 가정에 관여하는 목회자인 주인공의 고민과 그 갈등의 정점에서 환상을 통해 구약성서 안에 있는 환유적 이미지, 즉 바벨탑(창 11장)과 청동의 뱀(민 21장) 이미지를 본다. 이러한 성서 모티프의 소설적 구현은 저자의 문제의식과 종교적 이상이 교차하는 지점이라고 볼 수 있다. 본 논문은 소설 『청동의 뱀』이 지닌 장르로서의 소설에 대한 충실성과 저자가 소설가로서 지닌 문제의식과 이상의 괴리를 선명하게 드러내기 위해서 사용한 성서적 모티프인 바벨탑과 청동의 뱀의 의미를 성서신학의 눈을 통해 살펴보고자 하였다. 탐심과 맹신으로 대표되는 한국 산업화 시대의 모순은 성서의 대표적 환유인 바벨탑과 청동의 뱀 이미지로 집약되어 나타난다. 백도기의 소설 『청동의 뱀』은 한국 개신교 문학의 맹아로서 한계와 가능성을 보여준다. 하지만, 작가가 지닌 리얼리즘적 문제의식은 현실에 대한 객관적 서술이나 참여가 아니라 염세적이고 냉소적이며, 폐쇄적인 내면으로 향하고 있다. 여기에 백도기 목사의 문학에서 우리가 찾을 수 있는 기독교 문학의 가능성과 한계가 있다. 인간이 인간다움을 지니는 데에는 개인뿐만 아니라 반드시 사회와 자연이 필요하기 때문이다. 앞으로의 기독교 문학, 특히 소설은 리얼리즘적 문제의식뿐 아니라 개인과 사회와 자연을 사실적이고 총체적으로 담아내는 리얼리즘의 구현을 통해서 가능성을 새로이 열어갈 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This thesis is a study on critical mind and expression of biblical motifs in Baek Do-ki’s novel Bronze Snake. Baek Do-gi, is one of the representative novelists in the history of Korean Christian literature. He dealt with Christianity as a core issue or problem in his work. The main character of the novel Bronze Snake appears as a pastor, and stands as a self-reflection in that the author, Baek Do-ki, was a pastor affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in the Republic Korea after graduating from Hanshin University in 1964. The self-reflection shown in the novel does not stay on a personal level, but becomes a reflection on Korean Protestantism and at the same time a reflection on human nature. In addition, the realistic depiction of various characters in the novel highlights issues such as the absurdity of society, the dehumanization of humans and the dissolution of families that has been experienced as Korean society has modernized. As such, the Bronze Snake depicts the blind faith and greed of Korea and Protestantism, revealing the problems of reality and leading readers to reflect through this. The narrative presented in the Bronze Snake reflects the writer’s sense of realism as a novelist.
The title Bronze Snake expresses the metonymic image in the Old Testament through a fantasy experienced by the protagonist at the peak of the conflict. It is the expression of author`s main thought connected to the images of the Tower of Babel (Gen. 11) and the bronze serpent (Numbers 21). The novel`s expression of these biblical motifs can be seen as the intersection of the author’s critical mind and religious ideals. This thesis examines the meaning of the Tower of Babel and the bronze snake, the biblical motifs used to by the author to explore issues of biblical theology. The contradictions of Korea’s industrialization era, represented by covetousness and blind faith, are summarized in the images of the Tower of Babel and bronze snakes, which are examples of metonymy in the Bible. Baek Do-gi’s novel Bronze Snake shows the limitations and possibilities of Korean Protestant literature. However, the realist critical mind that the artist possesses is not an realistic description or participation in reality, but is rather a reflections of a pessimistic, cynical, and closed inner self. Here are the possibilities and limitations of Christian literature we can find in Pastor Dogi Baek’s literature. This is because human beings need not only be individuals but also social and connected to nature. Christian literature in the future, especially novels, will be able to open up new possibilities not only through realism, but also through realism that captures the individual, society, and nature in a realistic and holistic way.
