초록

영화 <버닝>(이창동, 2018)은 주인공 종수가 세상과 타자들을 만나고 의미화하면서 프레카리아트 청년에서부터 소설가로 성장하는 이야기를 펼친다. 이 글은종수의 내면에서 의미화 되어가는 세계의 모습과 내면의 변화 과정을 살피는 해석 전략으로 안타고니스트 벤이란 인물을 뱀파이어에 비유한다. 벤이 실체로서의뱀파이어가 아닐지라도 그를 뱀파이어성을 체현하는 뱀파이어적 주체로 봄으로써, 영화 표면에 드러나지 않았던 종수의 내면에 구조화된 세계를 좀 더 깊이 읽어 낼 수 있기 때문이다.
<버닝>을 은폐된 뱀파이어 서사로 읽는 것은 종수가 벤을 뱀파이어라고 여기고, 그를 불태워 죽이는 소설을 쓴다는 것으로 본다는 것이다. 이런 해석은 종수에게 벤은 왜 뱀파이어인가, 또 벤을 방화 살해하는 것이 왜 정당한가 하는 윤리적 판단의 문제를 제기한다. 따라서 이 글은 종수의 내면을 따라가며 벤이 ‘뱀파이어적 주체’임을 확인하면서, 종수가 벤을 불태워 죽이는 행적이 그로서는 윤리적 결말임을 밝히는 것이기도 하다.
벤은 단지 금수저 부르주아 청년일 뿐만 아니라, “재미있는 것이면 무엇이든한다”는 쾌락주의자로서 상징질서에 얽매이지 않는 정신병적 주체라고 할 수 있다. 그는 낡은 비닐하우스를 태우며 희열을 느끼는 것을 삶의 최고의 상태로 여긴다. 그에게 타자는 배려 대상이 아니며, 공동체란 존재하지 않는다. 그에게 타자들, 특히 자신의 손 안에 들어온 여성들은 시간이 갈수록 낡아지는 비닐하우스처럼 결국에는 흥미를 자아내지 못해 폐기돼야 할 대상으로 보인다. 이런 점에서벤은 인간의 모습을 하고 있지만, 내면적으로는 뱀파이어에 가깝다. 왜냐하면 자신의 희열을 위해 타자를 철저히 이용하고 폐기하기 때문이다. 이 같은 자기중심적인 반공동체적 파괴성이야말로 타자들을 흡혈하는 것과 다르지 않다.
반면 흙수저 소설가 지망생 종수는 사랑하는 해미의 실종을 계기로 수수께끼같은 세상을 탐구하며, 힘없는 약자들에 대해서 공감을 느끼고, 벤이 공동체를 위협하는 뱀파이어적 존재임을 깨닫는다. 결말에서 종수는 자신에게 드러난 세상의의미와 자신의 선택에 대해 말하는 소설로 쓴다. 이를 통해 종수는 뱀파이어적주체를 폭로하고 상징적으로 제거하는 윤리적 실천을 함으로써, 라캉적 행위의인물로 다시 태어난다. 종수에게 있어서 태워버려야 할 것은 버려진 힘없는 ‘비닐하우스’가 아니라, 힘없는 타자를 착취하는 힘있는 자인 벤인 것이다. <버닝>은 비닐하우스를 ‘버닝’해온 뱀파이어적 주체 벤을 종수가 ‘버닝’하는 서사이다.

영어초록

Burning tells the story of the protagonist Jong-su growing from a precariat youth to a novelist while encountering the world and other people and making meaning of them. This article likens the character of Ben, an antagonist, to a vampire as an interpretation strategy that examines the reality becoming meaningful within Jong-su’s inner transformation. This is because even though Ben is not a vampire as an entity, by seeing him as a vampiric subject who embodies vampirism, we can read more deeply the structured world inside Jong-su, which was rarely revealed on the surface of the film.
Reading Burning as a concealed vampire narrative is that Jong-su regards Ben as a vampire and writes a novel in which Jong-su burns him to death. This interpretation raises the question of ethical judgment as to why Ben is a vampire and why it is justified to arson and kill Ben within Jong-su’s mind. Therefore, this article is to follow the inner side of Jong-su, confirming that Ben is a ‘vampire,’ and revealing that Jong-su’s act of burning Ben is an ethical behavior.
Ben is not only a grand bourgeois young man, but a hedonist who says “I do whatever interests me”. He is a psychotic subject that is not bound by the symbolic order. He considers the ecstatic feeling of burning a deserted green house as the best thing in life. For him, the other is not worthy of considering, and community means nothing. To him, the other people, especially the women under his spell, seem to be objects that must be discarded, like a green house that gets worn out over time, as long as they no longer inspire his interest. In this respect, Ben is in the form of a human, but inwardly he is more like a vampire. This is because he thoroughly exploits and discards the others for his own enjoyment.
This self-centered anti-communal destructiveness is not different from sucking others’ blood.
On the other hand, as his beloved Hae-mi disappears, the wannabe novelist Jong-su explores the mysterious world, feels sympathy for the weak, and realizes that Ben is a vampire being a threat to the community.
Jong-su writes a novel that tells about the meaning of the world revealed to him and his response to Ben. Through the writing, Jong-su is reborn as a character of Lacanian act by exposing and symbolically removing the vampiric subject. What should be burned for Jong-su is not an abandoned powerless “green houses”, but it is Ben, a powerful man who exploits the powerless others. Burning is a narrative that “burns” Ben, who has been “burning” green houses for his own enjoyment.
On the other hand, the wannabe novelist Jong-soo explores a mysterious world with the disappearance of his beloved Haemi, feels sympathy for the weak and weak, and realizes that Ben is a vampire being threatening the community. Jongsoo writes as a novel that tells about the meaning of the world revealed to him and his choice. Through this, Jongsoo is reborn as a character of Lacanian behavior by exposing and symbolically removing the vampire subject. What should be burned for Jongsu is that it is not an abandoned powerless “green house”, but that it is Ben, a powerful man who exploits the powerless other. <Burning> is a narrative that “burns” Ben, who has been “burning” a green house.
