초록

이 글에서는 ‘제주도 뱀신앙’ 체계의 전승과 유지에 ‘뱀 조상담’의 서사 전승(조상신본풀이, 관련 신앙 전설 등)이 끼친 영향력과 의의를 살폈다. 우선 제주도 ‘뱀 조상담’ 중 두드러진 전승을 이루어 온 두 계열의 서사 맥락을 주목하여‘산신부군형’과 ‘선왕부군형’으로 나눈 뒤, 유형별 서사 전승과 변주 양상에 관여한 기제와 전략들을 파악하였다.
‘산신부군형’은 ‘특정 지역⋅집안’의 ‘혈연 선조(先祖)’가 ‘한라산(중산간)’에‘사냥’하러 갔다가 ‘뱀’을 ‘조상신’으로 모시게 된 내력을 전하는 뱀 조상담이다.
‘산신부군형’ 계열의 전승 범주(영역)는 협소하다 못해 한정적이다. 조상신본풀이로 전승⋅채록된 <선흘리 안씨 뱀 조상담>이 유일한 사례처럼 다루어지기 때문이다. 그러나 <상창하르방당본풀이>의 이본과 제주도 뱀신앙 관련 조사⋅보고자료들을 참고할 때, ‘산신부군형’과 관련 신앙은 제주도 뱀신앙의 토착성을 강하게 띤 유형이며, <선흘리 안씨 뱀 조상담>과 유사한 서사 전승도 본래 여럿이었을 것으로 판단하였다. ‘산신부군형’이 협소한 전승을 이루게 된 까닭으로는‘토착적 뱀신앙’에 대한 ‘부정적 인식’, 신격 체계의 조정과 재편에 따른 동물 신격의 하위 계층화 등을 들었다. 이러한 사정에도 <선흘리 안씨 뱀 조상담>은 ‘남성 혈연 조상 중심’의 특수하고도 우월한 ‘집안 내력’을 ‘뱀 조상담’의 서사 일부로 견인하며 특별하게도 안정적인 전승을 이룰 수 있었다.
‘선왕부군형’은 ‘특정 지역⋅특정 집안’의 ‘혈연 선조(先祖)’가 ‘큰 뱀’의 도움을 받아 ‘파선(破船)’의 위기를 벗어나게 되자, 그 ‘뱀’을 ‘조상신’으로 모시게된 내력을 골자로 한다. 이 유형의 서사 전승은 전파 영역이 넓고 변주 양상도다채로운 만큼 조상신본풀이와 당신본풀이의 성격을 공유하는 사례가 많았다.
그중 서사가 대폭 변주⋅확장된 사례인 <나주기민창본풀이>, <두리빌렛당본풀이>를 참고할 때, ‘선왕부군형’의 서사 전승은 모본(母本)을 적극적으로 수용하되 뱀신의 위상을 높이는 쪽으로 서사 맥락에 과감한 변주를 시도하며 신앙의분화⋅확장을 이루어 간 것으로 파악하였다.
이어서 앞선 고찰을 참고하여 두 유형의 뱀 조상담이 생산⋅공존⋅전승될 수있었던 원리를 밝히고자 하였다. ‘산신부군형’, ‘선왕부군형’에 속한 뱀 조상담은‘동일시와 확장의 논리’, ‘타자화의 논리’를 서사뿐만 아니라 뱀신앙 체계가 형성⋅전승되어 온 작동 원리로 택하고 있었다. 신앙 집단은 저마다의 뱀 조상담을 생산할 때, 단순한 모방을 통하여 살을 붙여가는 방식만을 좇지 않았다. 외부로부터 자신들의 뱀신앙을 보호하고자 할 때는 ‘동일시와 확장의 원리’, 독자적인 신앙을 구축할 필요가 있었을 때는 ‘그것’과 자신들의 ‘이것’은 ‘다르다’는 타자화의 논리를 일종의 기제처럼 내세워 왔다. 이 원리들은 모본의 서사 골자는 유지하면서도 특정 집안의 생업⋅역사⋅인물, 유사 신앙을 끌어들여 동계 서사를 확장⋅변주해 가는 전략이기도 하였다. 신앙 집단의 이 같은 기제와 전략들은 <칠성본풀이>와 같은 뱀 신앙담의 형성⋅전승, 토산드렛당신앙을 둘러싼 제주 사람들의 인식과 태도 등에도 지속적인 영향을 끼쳐 왔던 것으로 보인다.
제주도 뱀신앙 체계, 뱀 신앙담 전승에서 ‘뱀 조상담’의 존재는 특별하며 소중하다. ‘뱀 조상담’은 제주도 뱀신앙 체계를 형성⋅전승해 온 신앙 집단의 통합적⋅개별적 특성, 역사적 체험 등을 두루 담아 온 그릇이자, 제주도 뱀신앙을 둘러싼 내⋅외부의 평가와 관념이 완충⋅굴절되며 공진(共振)하여 온 흐름을 ‘서사 전승’과 그 ‘변주’로서 예증하여 온 산물로서 존재 의의가 크다.

영어초록

This study examines the influence and significance of “snake ancestortales” in the transmission and preservation of Jeju Island’s serpentworship system. The research focuses on two prominent narrative typeswithin these tales: “Sanshin-Bugun type” and “Seonwang-Bugun type.”By analyzing these narratives, this study identifies the mechanisms andstrategies involved in their transmission and variation.
The “Sanshin-Bugun type” tales recount how a specific family’sancestor, while hunting in Hallasan (the central mountain), encountered asnake and subsequently deified it as an ancestral deity. These narrativesare notably limited, with the “Seonheul-ri An Clan’s Snake AncestorTale” being a rare example. This study suggests that this scarcity resultsfrom negative perceptions of Indigenous snake worship and therelegation of animal deities within the evolving religious hierarchy.
However, the “Seonheul-ri An Clan’s Snake Ancestor Tale” has beenpreserved due to the family’s unique and esteemed lineage, which hasactively promoted the narrative.
In contrast, the “Seonwang-Bugun type” tales describe how an ancestorfrom a particular region or family, aided by a large snake, survived ashipwreck, and later honored the serpent as an ancestral deity. These narratives are diverse and widespread, indicating the broad distribution ofthis belief. This study observes that these tales often blend the elementsof both ancestor and tutelary deity worship. By referencing works like the“NajuGiminchang-Bonpuri” and “Durebilletdang-Bonpuri”, the researchhighlights how these narratives adapt and incorporate variations,enhancing the prominence of the snake deity and facilitating theexpansion and diversification of the belief system.
This study further explored the principles that allowed both types ofsnake ancestor tales to be produced, coexist, and evolve. It identifies the“logic of identification and expansion” and the “logic of othering” as keymechanisms. These principles enabled communities with different beliefsto construct unique religious identities, either by distinguishing theirpractices from others or by emphasizing shared elements to protect andpromote their snake worship traditions. These strategies have not onlyshaped the narratives themselves but have also influenced broader culturalperceptions and practices related to snake worship on Jeju Island.
In conclusion, the transmission and existence of snake ancestor talesare distinct and valuable components of Jeju Island’s religious heritage.
These narratives encapsulate the collective and individual experiencesof the Island’s inhabitants and reflecting their historical and culturalinteractions. By examining these tales, this study provides insights intothe complex dynamics of religious belief formation, adaptation, andpreservation within Jeju Island’s unique cultural landscape.
