Purpose: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL) in patients who underwent phacovitrectomy due to idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) and cataract, short-term clinical results up to 3 months after surgery were analyzed.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 21 eyes of 21 patients who underwent EDOF IOL implantation. All cases had combined ERM peeling with cataract surgery. All eyes received same EDOF IOL (Vivity; Alcon Laboratories, Inc.). The uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at 4 m, uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) at 60 cm, and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 33 cm were evaluated at postoperative 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months, and satisfaction was investigated after surgery.
Results: After surgery, the mean uncorrected visual acuity (logarithm of minimal angle of resolution) was 0.10 ± 0.06 at distance, 0.30 ± 0.13 at middle, and 0.29 ± 0.11 at near. There were no significant vision-threatening complications. In the survey, 81% of the patients showed above-average overall satisfaction, and the degree of independence on glasses after surgery was measured to be 90.5%, 81%, and 47.6% at distance, intermediate distance, and near respectively. All post-operative near visual acuity values showed statistically significant improvement compared to pre-operative values (p < 0.001).
Conclusions: For patients considering combined ERM peeling and cataract surgery, EDOF IOLs may be a viable option if there is a need for intermediate and near vision.
