白下 尹淳과 圓嶠 李匡師의 審美理想과 書藝術 (Esthetic ideal and art of calligraphy of Baek Ha Yoon, Soon and Won Kyo Lee, Kwang Sa)

초록

‘동국진체(東國眞體)’는 조선의 참된 글씨를 찾기 위해 17~18세기에 일어났던 개혁서예이다. 동국진체 書家는 서예이론과 서예술을 겸비하여 書風을 변화시켰고 서예로서 민족적 주체성과 자긍심을 드러낸 인물들이다.
필자가 동국진체 서가에 대한 通時的이고 종합적인 연구를 진행하는 과정의 하나인 본고는, 동국진체 서가중 師弟간이었던 白下 尹淳(1680~1741)과 圓嶠 李匡師(1705~1777)의 서예 審美理想과 書藝術과의 상관성을 고찰한 논문이다.
백하와 원교 양자는 돈독한 유대감속에서 ‘창경발속(蒼勁拔俗)’이란 서예 심미이상을 공유하고 있었다.
창경발속의 서예란 ‘俗氣를 떨쳐내어 筆力이 굳세고, 예스럽고, 노련하며, 빼어난 글씨’이다. 양자가 창경발속의 심미이상을 실현하는 과정을 살펴볼 때, 백하는 왕희지 唯一主義的 典範의식에 따라 왕희지 書帖을 연마하여 최상의 美麗한 자태를 지닌 서예술을 성취하였지만, 한편 연미함을 바라는 세속의 요구를 떨치지 못한데다 왕희지 진적(眞蹟)에서 멀어진 첩학(帖學)만을 연마한 결과 ‘白下體’가 ‘탈연미(脫姸媚)’란 목표 도달에 미흡했던 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 원교는 ‘탈연미’, ‘복고질(復古質)’하기 위해 왕희지의 글씨와 함께 周篆·漢隸를 도입하여 첩학(帖學)과 비학(碑學)을 아울러 연마했던 까닭에 ‘圓嶠體’가 蒼勁하고 고질(古質)한 필획을 성취할 수 있었다. 양자의 글씨는 방법론의 차이에 따라 자연스럽게 ‘백하체’와 ‘원교체’라는 독특한 개성과 풍격을 지닌 서예술로 차별화되어 나타난 것이다.
결과적으로 양자의 심미이상이 서예술로 구현된 정도를 구분한다면 백하보다는 원교에 이르러 그 성취도가 더 높은 것으로 판단되었다.
결론적으로 양자는 서가로서의 求道的 자세로 書가 지향해야할 본연의 심미적 세계를 진지하게 탐색하여 궁극적으로 속기를 초월한 순수 미의식의 地平을 열어놓은 점에서 예술사적으로 평가받아야 마땅하다. 이들의 심미이상은 당시 조선서예의 미적 이상과 특질을 대변하는 것이자, 또한 서예술이 나아가야할 방향성을 제시한 것으로서 조선 서예사의 내적(內的) 충실에 기여한 공로가 크다고 하겠다.

영어초록

DONGKUK JIN CHE (Genuine stroke of the Chosun Country) is the reformational calligraphy risen in the 17th~18th century in order to find the genuine handwriting in Chosun Dynasty. The Eastern country calligraphy family are the figures who had changed the writing style and showed the national independence and pride by calligraphy as they had both the calligraphy theory and art.
This study which is one of the courses of my holistic and general research on the family of calligraphy of Dong Kuk Jin Che (Genuine Stroke of the Chosun Country) is the dissertation which investigated the relevance between the esthetic ideal and art of calligraphy of Baek Ha Yoon, Soon(1680~1741) and Won Kyo Lee, Kwang Sa(1705~1777) who were the teacher and disciple.
Both Baek Ha and Won Kyo had jointly owned the esthetic ideal of calligraphy what we call “Chang Kyung Bal Sok” within the sense of sincere friendly ties.20
Calligraphy of Chang Kyung Bal Sok is the handwriting having strong, artistic, skilled and excellent writing power by expelling the worldly spirit. When we examine the course of realizing the esthetic ideal of Chang kyung Bal Sok of the two persons, Baek Ha achieved the art of calligraphy with the finest, elegant and beautiful figure by drilling the scrapbooks of writings of Wang Hee Ji by following the standardized legal code of the thought of singleness of Wang Hee Ji, but on the other hand, ‘Bake Ha Che’ was appeared as having failed to reach the goal of “Tal Yun Mi(will of art to be free from being pretty and beautiful)” as the result of drilling only Chup Hak which is far away from the original handwritings of Wang Hee Ji, while Won Kyo adopted “Ju Jon and Han Ye” to drill “Chup Hak and Bi Hak” together and could achieve the original handwriting style which is “Chang Kyung”, artistic and simple.
The handwritings of the two persons had appeared by being different as the art of calligraphy containing the unique personality and character what we call “Baek Ha Che” and “Won Kyo Che” so naturally by the difference of the methodologies.
As a result we may say that in the days of Won Kyo rather than the days of Baek Ha, the degree of achievements was higher in the standards the esthetic ideal of the two persons were realized as the art of calligraphy.
In conclusion two persons are eligible to be evaluated by artistic history in the achievements of opening the pure horizon of the esthetic sense transcending the worldly spirit ultimately by sincerely searching the original esthetic world the calligrapher should orient with the seeking attitude.
Their esthetic ideal represents the then esthetic ideal and characters of Chosun calligraphy and at the same time presented the direction the calligraphy should go forward and we can say that their deeds are great as having dedicated to the internal fidelity of the history of calligraphy of Chosun Dynasty era.
