청주지역 원삼국～백제시대 생활유적 토기 상대편년 연구 (Relative Chronological Studies of Pottery of the Dwelling Sites during the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period to Baekje Period in Cheongju Region)

초록

본고는 청주지역 일대에서 조사된 생활유적 출토 토기들을 중심으로 상대편년을 시도하여 그동안 진행된 분묘 유적 토기 위주의 편년연구를 보완하고, 나아가 분묘유적 자료와 종합하여 청주지역 고대 정치체의 성립과 규모, 변천양상을 규명하는데 필요한 기초자료를 확보하기 위한 연구이다. 구체적인 분석방법으로는 먼저 청주지역 일대에서 조사된 생활유적의 분포현황을 파악하고, 각 생활유적에서 출토된 토기들의 기종 구성과 기종별 상대편년을 진행한 후 이를 통해 유적간 상대순서 및 변천 양상을 파악하였다.먼저, 청주분지 일대의 생활유적 분포 특성을 살펴본 결과, 미호천과 그 지류에 인접한 구릉지대에 유적이 입지하다가 백제시대로 접어들면서 점차 可耕地 확보에 유리한 충적평야지로 생활유적의 입지가 이동되고 확대된 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 이들 제 유적들은 원삼국시대 후기에 청주분지 중앙부의 송절동, 봉명동 일대의 중심권역을 중심으로, 미호천 강북의 오창권역, 청주분지 남쪽의 분평동산남동권역의 3개 권역을 형성하고 있었다. 4세기대에 접어들면서 이 중 봉명동 일대의 중심세력을 중심으로 정치적으로 통합재현되었고 이후 점차 생활유적의 분포가 청주지역 전반으로 확산되었던 것으로 생각된다.이러한 청주지역 생활유적 출토 토기들을 분석한 결과 모두 4期에 걸쳐 변화되었음을 알 수 있었다. 청주지역 생활유적 1기는 3세기 4/4분기부터～4세기 초 사이에 해당되며, 청주 분평동 Ⅰ유적이 이 시기에 해당된다. 이 시기는 아직 한성백제의 영향력이 보이지 않는 단계로서 청주지역 마한사회의 생활문화를 그대로 보여주는 단계라고 할 수 있다.2기는 4세기 초부터 4세기 2/4분기 사이이며, 청원 연제리, 풍정리, 청주 분평동 유적 및 명암동의 이른 시기 유구들이 해당된다. 2기의 특징은 경질무문 심발형토기가 아직 공존하면서 원저단경호의 구연부 형태가 매우 다양해지며, 평저호, 장경호, 단경소호, 杯 등의 새로운 기종들이 대거 등장하여 청주지역 마한사회에 적지 않은 변화가 생긴 시기라고 할 수 있다.3기는 4세기 2/4분기부터 4세기 3/4분기 사이이며, 청주 가경동 4지구(택지개발지구), 비하동, 명암동, 송절동 유적 등 상당수의 유적들이 이 시기에 해당된다. 3기에는 종래의 토기 형식이 소멸되거나 변화되는 양상이 많이 관찰되며, 전 기종에 걸쳐 구연부 발달이 현저하고 세련된 면모를 보인다. 3기는 2기와 달리 내적 성장과 변화가 가속화된 시기라고 할 수 있다.4기는 4세기 후엽 이후에 해당되며, 청원 쌍청리와 청주 명암동, 봉명동 유적의 생활유구들이 이 시기에 속한다. 3기에 진행된 변화들이 지속된 단계라고 할 수 있으나 현재의 자료로는 4기 이후에 대한 구체적인 분석이 어려웠다.이상의 청주지역 생활유적들은 2기를 획기로 큰 변화가 시작되고 3기에 더욱 가속화됨을 볼 수 있는데, 이 2기와 3기는 청주 봉명동 고분군 단계에 해당된다. 생활유적 자료가 아직 부족하긴 하지만 이 봉명동 단계의 분묘군과 생활유적들은 청주지역 고대 정치체의 성립과정과 실체를 보여주는 실증적인 자료라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This article aims to complement the chronological studies on the basis of the pottery discovered in dwelling sites in Cheongju Region and to get basic data for establishing ancient political structure, its scale and transition aspect through combining informations from burial sites. First, I analyzed the distribution pattern of dwelling sites in Cheongju Region and I made chronological order of pottery typology and a relative chronology set up among sites.
The spatial distribution of dwelling sites shows that habitants have settled in hill areas near the Miho Stream and its tributaries and they have gradually moved to the floodplain for having arable lands entering the Baekjae Period. We can divide these sites into 3 groups in the final stage of Proto-Three Kindoms Period. ; the first one is Songjeol-dong, Bongmyung-dong in central part of Cheongju Basin; the second one is Ochang area in the northern part of Miho Strerem; the third one is Bunpyung-dong․Sannam-dong in the southern part of Cheongju Basin. During the 4th century, these groups have been unified by political group based on Bongmyong-dong and then dwelling sites have been diffused all over the Cheongju Region.
According to pottery analysis, there were 4 stages; the first stage corresponds to the end of the 3th century to the beginning of the 4th century and Bunpyung-dong Site N° I would be attributed to this stage. The influence of Hansung Baekjae didn't show yet and the original culture of Mahan period would be still maintained.
The second stage corresponds to the beginning of 4th century to mid-4th century. Yeonjeri site, Pungjeong-ri site, Bunpyung-dong site and early Myungam-dong site would be attributed to this stage. The characteristics of this stage of this stage would be the co-existence of deep bowl type plain hard pottery and the lips of short-necked jar became very various and new pottery types appeared such as pottery with flat bottom, long-necked jar, small short-necked jar, flat cup. It should reflect an important change in Mahan society in Cheongju Region.
The third stage corresponds to mid-4th century to the 3/4 of the 4th century. It includes many sites such as Kakyung-dong Locality 4 site, Biha-dong site, Myungam-dong site and Songjeol-dong site. During this stage, old fashioned pottery has been disappeared or changed, especially the pottery lip has been developed and refined. It would be a internal development period, different from the second stage.
The fourth stage corresponds to the end of the 4th century and Ssangchung-ri site, Myoungam-dong site and Bongmyoung-dong sites come under this stage. It seems that the internal changes would be continued, which started from the 3th stage but it is difficult to conduct more detailed analysis because lack of data.
In brief, dwelling sites in Cheongju Regions show a crucial changes from the second stage and it has been accelerated during the 3rd stage and these stages correspond to Bongmyong-dong Burials stage. Even we have not enough materials concerning dwelling sites, dwelling sites and burial sites of Bongmyung-dong stage provide important information about the establishing of ancient political strucutres in Cheongju Region and their entities.
