麗末~鮮初 硬質白磁로의 이행과정 연구 (A Study on the Transference of the Hard White Porcelain from the Later Period of Goryeo Dynasty to the Early Period of Joseon Dynasty)

초록

The principal white porcelain of Joseon is considered 'Hard White Porcelain' which has very fine clay particle and is made elaborately. However, each researcher has presented different appearance time of hard white porcelain from the later period of Goryeo to the early period of Joseon. This paper clarifies the concept of 'hard' and the appearance time of the hard white porcelain on that basis.
First of all, it is important to decide with physical judgement based on scientific analysis rather than visual judgement because the criterion of 'hard' depends on the materials of the porcelain or the processes of baking. This paper chemically analyzes the essential elements of the clay which form white porcelain kiln excavations from the later Goryeo to the early Joseon. According to this research, it becomes clear the relationship between hardness of the white porcelain and the amount of basic element. If there is small amount of this element, the clay of white porcelain is not well- melted, also there is large amount of this element, the same condition happens to the porcelain.
On the basis of this respect, the excavations of the 1380's~1420's, from Yanggu Bangsan kiln area, are not completely melted because of the coarse clay particle, have semi-hard level. This aspect appears same to the some of the kilns of Gwangju which started to produce the porcelain from 1420's. From the 1430's, the next stage, the production of porcelain was made in mainly in Gwangju and there shows the steps of transference to hard white porcelain. Consequently, the transference of white porcelain had completed in the 1430's.
