白南雲의 단군신화 인식 (A Study on Baek Nam-woon’s Perception of the Dangun Myth)

초록

백남운은 식민지시대 마르크스주의 역사학의 관점에서 『조선사회경제사』와 『조선봉건사회경제사』를 저술하여 식민주의 사관을 극복하고 한국사의 보편적 발전 과정을 증명하려고 하였다. 특히 고대사의 영역을 다룬 『조선사회경제사』의 緖論에서 「단군신화에 대한 비판적 견해」를 발표한 바 있다. 여기에서는 일본인 연구자들의 단군 인식을 비판하기도 했지만, 최남선, 신채호 등 민족주의 역사가들의 단군신화 해석에 대한 비판이 중점이었다고 생각된다. 특히 당시는 학술계에서 조선학운동의 흐름이 가시화되던 시기였으며, 이미 단군이 조선의 역사와 문화의 기원이자 상징으로 대중적인 영향력을 획득하고 있었다. 세계사적 보편성 속에서 조선사를 체계화시키려 노력한 백남운의 관점에서는 단군으로부터 기원하고 상징되는 조선 민족의 형상화는 ‘하나의 특수한 문화사관’이며, 과학적 역사관으로 조선사를 이해하는 데 매우 위협적인 ‘반동적’ 역사관에 다름 아니었다. 이에 백남운은 단군신화가 계급사회의 산물이며 시대에 따른 변화의 가능성을 지적하면서 단군이 실재적이지도 특정한 인격자도 아님을 분명히 하였다.
해방 이후에도 백남운은 『조선사회경제사』에서 제기한 단군신화론을 견지하고 있었다. 미군정 아래에서 부르주아민족주의자들이 교육이념으로 홍익인간을 차용하려고 할 때에도 일제의 그것과 다름없는 국수적 반동사관이라고 적극적으로 비판하였다. 또한 한국전쟁기 저술로 추정되는 『조선력사』에서도 기존의 단군신화 인식에 근거하였고, 이후 북한학계에서 진행된 단군신화 토론회에서도 자신의 신화 인식을 견지하였음이 확인된다. 그러나 당시 북한 역사학계는 고조선과 단군신화를 연결시키려고 했기 때문에 백남운의 단군인식은 비판을 받게 된다. 이러한 흐름은 당시 김일성에 의한 ‘주체의 제기’라는 배경에서 북한 역사학계가 마르크스주의 역사학에서 민족주의 역사학의 관점을 보다 강화시키려는 맥락으로 이해할 수 있다. 아울러 이 과정은 완고한 마르크스주의자였던 백남운이 북한 역사학계에서 서서히 배제되어가던 정황을 암시한다고 생각된다.

영어초록

Baek Nam-woon wrote The Economic History of the Joseon Society and The Economic History of the Feudal Joseon Society from the perspective of Marxist historical studies during the colonial days, trying to overcome the colonial view of history and demonstrate the universal development process of Korean history. In his “Critical Opinions of the Dangun Myth” in the introduction of his The Economic History of the Joseon Society that covered the ancient history, in particular, Baek criticized some nationalist historians including Choi Nam-seon and Shin Chae-ho for their interpretations of the myth. From the perspective of Baek that tried to systemize the Joseon history in the universality of the world history, the embodiment of the Joseon people that originated in Dangun and were represented by him was a “single particular view of cultural history” and “reactionary” view of history that was very threatening to the understanding of Joseon history based on the scientific view of history. Baek pointed out that the Dangun Myth was an outcome of the hierarchical society and was subjected to possible changes according to the times and made it clear that Dangun was neither real nor certain man or character.
Even after the liberation of Korea, Baek maintained his theory on the Dangun Myth that he raised in his The Economic History of the Joseon Society. When the bourgeois nationalists tried to adopt the idea of Hongikingan as the educational ideology of the nation under the US military regime, Baek actively criticized it as a nationalist reactionary view of history that was the same as the view of history advocated by the ruling Japanese. Baek maintained his old attitude toward the Dangun Myth in his The Joseon History, which is estimated to have been written during the Korean War, and at the discussions about the myth held by the academic circles of North Korea. In the early 1960s when the historical circles of North Korea tried to connect the Dangun Myth to Gojoseon, however, his perception of the myth was under fire. This flow can be understood in the context of the historical circles of North Korea trying to reinforce the perspective of nationalist historical studies instead of Marxist historical studies in the background of “Juche” raised by Kim Il-sung those days. This process implies the circumstances in which Baek, who was a stubborn Marxist, was gradually excluded from the historical circles of North Korea.
