영국도서관(British Library) 소장 경판한글소설 재론 -배접지를 통해 추론한 방각본의 간행 상황을 중심으로- (A study on Korean woodblock novels in British Library)

초록

영국도서관(British Library)에는 상당량의 한국 고서가 있다. 그 대부분은 19세기 말 또는 20세기 초 영국박물관(British Museum)으로 들어온 것으로, 영국도서관이 영국박물관에서 독립되어 나오면서 편입된 것이다. 한국 고서 가운데는 의궤, 지도, 문집 외에 상당수의 방각본이 있는데, 특히 경판한글소설은 35종이나 된다. 이들 경판한글소설에 대해서는 이미 스킬렌드와 이창헌 교수의 조사와 연구가 있었고, 또 일찍이 김동욱 교수가 대부분의 자료를 영인 출간하기도 했다.
본 연구는 이러한 선배들의 업적을 이어서, 이들 자료의 수집 과정 등을 더욱 구체적으로 살펴보고, 아울러 경판한글소설의 배접지와 능화문을 이용하여 방각소 및 방각본의 인출 비중 등을 추론하고자 하였다. 인출 비중이라 함은 구체적으로 소설과 한문교양서의 출간 비중을 뜻하는데, 표본의 수가 적어서 아직 일반화는 무리라고 할 수 있지만, 『천자문』 『동몽선습』 『통감』 등의 기초한문교양서 이상으로 소설이 많이 간행되었음은 추정할 수 있다. 방각소와 인출 비중의 추정은 여러 다른 변수가 있을 수 있으므로 단언하기 어려우나, 이 연구를 통해 배접지와 능화문 정보를 좀 더 체계적으로 정리해야 할 필요성은 제기했다고 생각한다. 경판한글소설, 나아가 고전문학작품, 특히 해외에 소장된 고전문학 자료에 대한 체계적인 정리가 시급하다.

영어초록

The collection of British Library includes well over 150 million items in most known languages and 3 million new items are added every year. There is the world's earliest dated printed book, the Diamond Sutra in the Library. British Library is one of the most important librarys in the world.
The library also has the Korean collection, and the collection includes some Korean rare books. The rare book collection has some very valuable books, for example The documents of royal banquet in 1809 己巳進表裏進饌儀軌, the collection also has 35 titles of Korean woodblock novels. The novels are not well made books like The documents of royal banquet in 1809, but they are also valuable as that.
The novels are introduced by Prof. Skillend in 1968 for the first time, Kodae Sosŏl: A Survey of Korean Traditional Style Popular Novels』(SOAS, Univ. of London, 1968), and in 1970’s Prof. Kim Donguk has published the photocopy of the novels. In 1990’s Prof. Lee Changhun has submitted a study on the Korean woodblock novels published in Seoul as a doctoral dissertation. The dissertation includes a study on the collection of British Library. Recently a famous japanese scholar of Korean rare books, Prof. Hujimoto Yukio has made the detailed catalogue of Korean rare book in British Library(大英圖書館所藏朝鮮本及び日本古書の文獻學的․語學的硏究, 2007).
In spite of the several investigations on the collection the characteristics of the novels are not unrevealed well. My study is focused on the book cover, one is the patterns on the background of book cover 菱花紋, the other is the papers used in the inner part of the book cover 褙接紙. I found out 15 sheets of the inner paper, 8 sheets are from the woodblock novels, 6 sheets are from the confucian books written in Classical Chinese, 1 sheet is from the book of the explanation of dreams. By the inner papers it is guessed the amount of the published novels in 19^th century Chosun was much more than that we ordinary guess. Nowadays it is easy to find the confucian books written in Classical Chinese published in 19^th century Chosun, but not the woodblock novels. Almost of all Koreans thought the former are valuable, the latter useless to keep, so the latter became the rare book, the former not. The inner papers show a aspect of the situation of commercial woodblock print in the 19^th century Chosun.
