초록

This thesis intended to illuminate a mean of travel motif in korean modern novels from a standpoint of the relationship with a wife's death. The modern novels in Korea from late 19th century to early 20th century, especially which can be spoken as canon, are engaged with a wife's death. So when we wish to understand the peculiarity of travel in modern literature, the aspect which is internalized to the authorial subject has the special meaning. This thesis starts from that recognition about this problem.
At this view point, this thesis analyzed Lee kwang soo's 'Moojeong', Kim Dong-in's 'Baetaragi', Yeom Sang-seop's 'Mansejeon', which have been evaluated as the canons of korean early modern novels. In 'Moojeong', the meaning of a travel motif is searching for knowledge or adventure. It is an act which works off it's frustration by enlightment.
In 'Baetaragi', the meaning of a travel motif is wandering or roaming. To use Lacanian terminology, the brothers in this story have undergone a "subjective destitution". They have no name, no signifier to represent them, which is why they retain thire consistency only through identification with their symptom. The only thing that allows to preserve some consistency is precisely thrir personal nut, identification with their symptom, a song-baetaragi. It makes their travel wandering.
And in 'Manseojeon', the meaning of a travel motif is hovering and observing. Lee In-hwa, a hero of this story, leaves for Korea, after receiving a telegram telling him of his wife's critical condition. On his way to Korea, he hovers cities, observes people in Korea and Japan, and thinks of his subjective condition which relates with nation and class. He is in the middle class, so he has despised people in work class despite they are japanese. But seeing and suffering a condition of Korean people, he knows that he is also Korean as uncivilized people. It makes for him to have a historical view.
