배인철의 흑인시에 나타난 주제 의식 고찰 (A Study on Theme of African American Traits of Bae In-cheol's poems)

초록

배인철은 한국 시문학사에서 오랫동안 함몰된 시인이다. 그의 전기적인 사항에 대한 정확한 정리는 물론 그의 작품 세계를 본격적으로 고찰한 논문이없는 형편이다. 그 이유는 그가 불의의 사고로 28세에 세상을 뜬 데다가 작품 활동 기간이 짧아 현재까지 5편의 시작품만이 확인되기 때문이다. 그렇지만 그가 일관되게 추구한 흑인시는 해방기의 시문학사에서 주목할 만한 가치를 지닌다.
배인철은 흑인시를 통해 미군정이 지배하던 해방기의 상황을 예리하게 간파했다. 제2차 세계대전 후 세계의 지배 세력으로 등장한 미국의 실체를 흑인 문제를 통해 통찰하고 극복을 추구한 것이다. 이와 같은 그의 세계 인식혹은 시대 인식은 해방기의 시문학사에서 뚜렷한 특성을 갖는다.
배인철은 단순히 소재 차원에서 흑인 문제를 선택하고 그려낸 것이 아니라 새로운 세계를 추구했다. 흑인 노예들이나 식민지 시대를 겪은 조선 민중들 모두 약소민족의 처지라는 동질감을 가지고 연대적 투쟁을 추구한 것이다. 그와 같은 면은 “온世界에 戰線은 펄처있”(「人種線―黑人 쫀슨에게」)다,“온세계 弱小民族은 싸우고 있다”(「․루이스에게」) 등으로 여실하게 나타나고 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the awareness of AfricanAmerican traits in Bae In-cheol’s Poems. Bae In-cheol wrote five pieces ofAfrican American poetry in liberation period. That period was just aboutthree years, but it was an extraordinary and important period in modernhistory of Korea. In this period, Bae In-cheol tried to write new poetrieswith African American traits of poetry within Korean literature. He regardedAfrican American poetry as a symbol of national situation.
Bae In-cheol’s poems pursuit to accuse white men of criminal segregationand anti-American. His poems also pursuit to contribute for construction ofnation state and absolute national liberation, which consists of people’sfreedom, equality, subjectivity, and independence. Dealing with segregationand national identity, Bae In-cheol’s African American trait of poems aimednot only for sorrow, anger, sense of suffering, but also for the sense ofsolidarity among African American people and Koreans by pursuing varioushistorical fact, images, and poetic languages like those of realist poets.
Looking through his life and five pieces of African American poetry, weare able to infer that there are lots of passions for ideology. In liberation period, we can see that there were both leftism and rightism among thepoets. The leftist poets devoted themselves to social problems, especiallynational liberation. Bae In-cheol emphasized the ethical responsibility ofpoets, particularly understanding well what was the situation of Americanmilitary government is.
From these points of view, we can analogize the meaning of BaeIn-cheol’s poetry. He plays an important role to bridge the various opinionsof realist poets within national liberation period through his own AfricanAmerican poetry. Eventually we understand how Bae In-cheol’s poetryshowed bad images of America and the sharp awareness of the age unlikelyother poets of those days.
