초록

본 글의 목적은 1894년 경상도 구미ㆍ선산 지역 동학농민혁명의 역사적 상황을 살피고, 동학농민군을 중심으로 한 각 계층 인물들의 현실인식이 최근 한국문학에서 어떻게 형상화되고 있는지를 밝히는데 있다.
경상도 지역의 동학농민혁명은 호남지역에서의 전개과정과는 다른 양상을 보였다. 호남지역에서 1차 봉기가 발생했을 때 영남지역 농민군은 이에 함께 하지는 못했으나, 이후 호남지역 농민군의 개혁활동에 영향을 받으면서 영남지역에서도 동학농민군이 결집되어 크게 세력을 형성해 나갔다. 동학교단 해월의 9월18일 기포령에 호응하여 충청도ㆍ경상도 각지에서 기포한 농민군들은 북상하는 농민군 주력 부대와 합세하기 위해 봉기했다. 구미ㆍ선산 지역 동학농민군은 주로 김산, 상주 영동 등지의 농민군과 연합하여 조직적 전투를 전개했다. 그들은 선산읍을 점거하기도 했고, 일본군 낙동병참부를 공격하기도 하였다.
이러한 1894년 경상도 구미ㆍ선산 지역 동학농민혁명 과정은 동학농민혁명 120주년 2014년을 맞아 동학농민혁명을 형상화 한 다수의 문학작품으로 재탄생되었다. 본 글에서는 그 중 1894년 경상도 구미ㆍ선산 지역 동학농민혁명에 관계한 김용락과 채길순의 작품을 중심으로 작품 속 인물들의 현실인식을 분석하였다.
김용락의 시 2편에서는, 구미ㆍ선산 지역 해평 평야에 등장하는 선산 동학농민군의 현실인식이 고양되고 있으며 그것은 시간과 공간의 확장과도 관계하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 즉 내려다보는 하늘 아래 인간이면 가야하는 바른 길을 가고 있는 참사람의 모습이 바로 그들 구미ㆍ선산 동학농민군인 것이다. 채길순 『웃방데기』와 조중의 『망국』에서는 1894년 동학농민혁명에 참여한 각 계층의 현실인식을 살펴보았다. 인물 이대감, 조민구를 통해 유교 세계관을 지닌 조선 상층 인물들의 고정된 현실인식을, 관군 김석중, 김병돈을 통해 조선 관리들의 변동적인 현실인식을, ‘갑이’를 통해 동학농민군의 새세상을 향한 현실인식을 도출하였다.
『웃방데기』 ‘갑’이라는 인물로 대표되는 동학농민군이 해월의 눈빛을 통해 감지한 ‘새로운 세상의 가능성’은 조선 동학농민군의 인식으로 대변될 수 있다. 그것은 경상도 동학농민군, 구미ㆍ선산 동학농민군의 현실인식이 고양되어가는 데 기여한다고 할 수 있다. 실제 해월 기포령 이후 많은 경상도 동학농민군이 ‘새로운 세상의 가능성’에 대한 확신을 바탕에 두고 ‘참사람의 길’로 들어서고 있음을 앞의 작품들을 통해 파악할 수 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine a historical situation of the Donghak Peasant Revolution in 1894 of GumiㆍSeonsan in Gyeongsang-do Province, and to clarify how characters’ awareness of reality is being embodied recently in Korean literature.
The Donghak Peasant Revolution in Gyeongsang-do area showed the aspect different from the developmental process in Honam area. In other words, when the primary rebellion took place in Honam area, the peasant army in Yeongnam area failed to do together with this. But with being influenced by the reform activity of the peasant army in Honam area, the Donghak Peasant Army even in Yeongnam area was united and proceeded with forming great force. The peasant army, which rose up in each region of Chungcheong-do ProvinceㆍGyeongsang-do Province, with responding to Giporyeong(起包令) by Haewol of the Donghak Assembly in September 18, rebelled in order to fight together with the main unit of the peasant army moving northward. The Donghak peasant army in GumiㆍSeonsan area united with the peasant army mainly in Gimsan, Sangju, Yeongdong and others and then developed the organized combat. They ever occupied Seonsam-eup and attacked Nakdong War Commissaries of the Japanese army as well.
This process of the Donghak peasant army in GumiㆍSeonsan area of Gyeongsang-do Province in 1894 was reborn as a number of literary works that embodied many Donghak peasant revolutions. The awareness of reality in characters of a work was analyzed focusing on the works by Kim Yong-rak and Chae Gil-soon, who were related to the Donghak peasant army in GumiㆍSeonsan area of Gyeongsang-do Province in 1894 out of it.
In Kim Yong-rak's two poems, the perception of reality in the Donghak peasant army of Seonsan, which appears in the Haepyeong Plain of GumiㆍSeonsan area, is being uplifted. It could be known to be relevant even to the expansion in time and space. That is to say, the image of true man, who is going to right path that is inevitable when it comes to human being under the heaven of looking down, is just the Donghak peasant army in GumiㆍSeonsan themselves. In Chae Gil-soon's 『Utbangdegi』 and Jo Jung's 『Ruined Country』, the awareness of reality in each class, who participated in the Donghak peasant army in 1894, was examined. It elicited the fixed awareness of reality in upper-class characters of Joseon who have the Confucian view of the world through characters Lee Dae-gam and Jo Min-gu, the variable perception of reality in Joseon government officials through the government army Kim Seok-jung and Kim Byeong-don, and the recognition of reality toward the new world in the Donghak peasant army through ‘Gapi.’
‘Possibility of new world’ perceived by the Donghak peasant army of being represented as a character called 'Gap,' may be spoken for the awareness of the Donghak peasant army in Joseon. It can be said to contribute to which the perception of reality in the Donghak peasant army of Gyeongsang-do Province and the Donghak peasant army of GumiㆍSeonsan is enhanced. It could be grasped that lots of the Donghak peasant army in Gyeongsang-do Province following Haewol's Giporyeong(起包令) is actually entering 'way of true man' based on the conviction in 'possibility of new world,' through the above works.
