坊刻本 小說의 檢閱本과 納本에 대한 硏究 (A Study on Banggak-bon Novels’ Censored Edition(檢閱本) and Nap-bon(納本))

초록

이 글에서는 坊刻本 古小說의 檢閱本과 納本 자료, 검열 과정, 검열로 인한 고소설의 변화 등을 살폈다. 이를 위해 규장각과 국립중앙도서관에 소장되어 있는 검열본과 납본 자료 60여 종을 살펴보았다. 이 과정에서 몇 가지 양상을 확인되었다. 漢文 坊刻本 고소설의 경우, 검열 과정에서 별다른 문제없이 통과되었다. 活版本으로 再 刊行될 때에도 별 문제 없이 검열에 통과하여 출판되었다.
반면, 한글 방각본 소설의 경우는 종류가 많은데, 이때 모든 책을 검열했던 것이 아니라 특정 작품만을 선별하여 검열했던 정황을 볼 수 있다. 또한 두 출판사에서 검열본(원고본)을 공동으로 한 부만 제출하여 출판허가를 받았던 사실도 보인다. 그리고 한남서림의 『임장군전』처럼 “대명”, “조선국”처럼 특정 단어를 삭제하라는 검열 지시를 원고본에서 볼 수 있지만 실제 간행물에서는 이와는 상관없이 그대로 출판되었음을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 사례를 종합해 보면, 방각본 고소설의 경우, 근/현대문학 자료와 비교해서 검열이 비교적 허술했던 것으로도 보이며, 실제 출판과는 별개였던 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to deal with classic novels’ censored edition and nap-bon, censorship process, and change resulted from censorship. Compared with modern or contemporary literature, classic novels have not been discussed in terms of these points. A series of these matters related to classic novels need to be discussed in order to examine the censorship of literary publications during the colonial era in general.
This study has examined the status of censored editions and nap-bon in Seoul National University’s Gyujanggak and National Library of Korea and the aspects and types of censorship. Through the research, several aspects have been found. Chinese-written novels seem to have been passed censorship without any particular problems. Also, when republished in hwalpan-bon, they passed censorship and became published easily with no particular problems.
Meanwhile, compared to Chinese editions, Hangul banggak-bon novels indicate some other aspects. First of all, we can find that when publishers submitted a large amount of censored editions (manuscript forms) for publication, not all books were censored but only some particular works were selected to conduct censorship selectively. Also, in some cases, only one censored edition (manuscript form) was submitted commonly for two publications, and the same permission was gotten for each publication.
In fact, among the cases of classic novels’ censorship, Hannamseorim’s <Imjanggunjeon> received an order of censorship to omit “Daemyeong” or “The Country of Chosun”. However, when making nap-bon, those parts were not omitted but covered with white paper to get an approval of publication. Regarding banggak-bon novels, when performing censorship, only the division of the Japanese Government General of Korea in charge of it conducted censorship, and in the actual process of publication, they were distributed with no improvement in that condition.
Considering these cases, we can assume that compared with modern or contemporary literature, classic novels went through censorship rather roughly, and classic novels’ censorship followed only some fixed rules, but it was, in fact, different from the actual distribution of publications.
