"방한림전"의 소수자 가족 연구 (A study of the minority family structure in the "Banghallimjeon")

초록

본고는 ‘소수자’와 ‘가족’이라는 핵심 키워드에 입각하여 <방한림전>에 대한 새로운 논의를 전개하였다. 적극적 소수자의 길을 걷는 방관주 ․영혜빙 부부는 물론, 잠재적 소수자로서의 입양아 낙성과 유모 유랑까지도 주목한 것이다. 결국 이 네 사람 모두가 소수자라는 하나의 키워드로 묶일 수 있다는 데 착안하였다. 또한, <방한림전>의 공동체는 다분히 가족의 성격을 띤다. 그들 소수자들은 하나의 가족 공동체를 이루게 되면서 점차 안정되고 성장하여 마침내 사회제도적 한계마저 넘어서는 양상을 보인다. 본고는 <방한림전>의 소수자 가족으로부터 미래지향적인 새로운 가족의 유형을 발견하고, 가족 해체 위기에 직면한 오늘날에 더욱 특별해진 이들 소수자 가족의 의미를 구명하고자 하였다.
나름의 성과로는, 기존에 방관주와 영혜빙에 비해 주목받지 못했던 유모와 낙성의 소수자적 면모까지도 논의선상에 올려 이들의 가치를 재조명했다는 점을 들 수 있다. 특히 유랑은 조선시대의 노비 신분으로서 기존의 통념에 의하면 전형적인 가족의 구성원으로 분류하기 어려운 인물이다. 본고에서는 구체적 사료(史料)를 통해 유모 유랑에 대한 새로운 해석의 가능성을 열고 그를 ‘가족’의 담론 안으로 끌어 올 수 있었다. 낙성의 경우에도, 그동안은 부수적 인물로 평가받는데 그쳤지만 본고는 그 또한 주요한 소수자 가족의 일원으로 보고 유의미한 논의를 전개하였다. 그 스스로가 이미 동성혼 부부에게서 입양된 자녀임을 알고 있었으면서도 흔들림 없이 성장하여 입신양명(立身揚名)했다는 점과 후사 잇기를 통해 궁극적으로 소수자 집단의 ‘비정상의 정상화’를 가능케 한 일등공신이었다는 점이 특기할 만하다. 아울러, 기존에 여성의식이나 가부장제의 관점으로 접근할 때 구명이 쉽지 않았던 ‘가문 존속의 문제’를 소수자 집단의 한계 초월의 측면에서 긍정적으로 해석한 점도 본 연구의 의의라 하겠다.

영어초록

This study is based on the two keywords: ‘Minority’ and ‘Family’ in the Banghallimjeon. The article first noted that not only Yeonghyebing and Banggwanju can be classified a minority, but also the adoptee Nakseong and the nanny Yurang in spite of their unexposed aspect as a minority.
The Banghallimjeon characters form a minority community, which gradually stabilizes and grows the individuals develop characteristics as a minority. This makes it possible for the community to exceed its social norms. The Banghallimjeon community has a very close-knit personality and also depicts the shape of a future family. The study is meaningful in discovering a type of new family in this community of minorities where they try to identify the meaning of the minority family in Banghallimjeon.
Yurang belongs to a lower rank of the Joseon Dynasty, which is difficult to categorize as a typical family member. This paper opens the possibility of a new interpretation of the nanny through historical data and was able to bring the nanny Yurang into the family discussion.
In the case of Naksseng, the existing research has been referred to as a secondary figure, but he also viewed it as a member of an important minority family. It is noteworthy that although he had already known the identity of his parents who are a married same sex couple, he has risen steadily and finally succeeded in gaining fame. He can be regarded as the best contributor who was able to overcome the abnormal structure of the minority group. This paper analyzed the problem of “survival of the family” as transcending the limits of the minority family, which was not easy to identify when approaching from feminist or a patriarchal view point.
The success of a single member of the Banghallim community is not only his/her own, but also the successes of the entire minority family. The Banghallim family is unique because it shows the positive aspect of the formation and growth of a minority family in the late Joseon Dynasty. The Banghallimgeon presents a new family comprehend able, get abnormal, family structure to modern people who are facing the crises such as family separation, divorce, death, etc.
