초록

이 글은 『소설가 구보씨의 일일』(1970~1972)에서 구보 씨가 수행하는 영화비평을 분석함으로써 구보 씨가 드러내는 의식 세계를 새로운 관점에서 조명한다. 최인훈 소설의 상호텍스트성 양상을 분석하는 기존의 연구가 최인훈의 소설과 이 텍스트에 등장하는 또 다른 문학 텍스트 간의 관련 양상을 드러내는 연구였다면 이 글은 상호텍스트성의 확장 측면에서 최인훈의 소설 속에 등장하는 영화에 대한 본격적인 분석을 시도한다. 구보 씨는 아시아—태평양 전쟁을 소재로 한 일본 영화 <저 깃발을 쏘아라>(1944)를 아프리카의 보어 전쟁을 다룬 영화로 기억하는데 두 전쟁의 치환은 제국주의와 식민주의의 대표적 피해자인 아프리카 대륙에 대한 최인훈의 관심을 보여주는 동시에 피식민 경험의 반경을 아프리카까지 넓히려는 작가의 의도적인 행위이다. 구보 씨는 1864년 미국 원주민 학살을 소재로 한 미국 영화 <솔저 블루>(1970)를 자신의 당대 사건인 베트남 ‘미라이 학살’의 알레고리로 본다. 두 영화는 각각 다른 전쟁을 배경으로 하지만 구보 씨는 두 영화에 공통으로 보이는 민간인 학살에 주목하고 거기서 드러난 인간의 야만과 광기의 책임 주체를 다름 아닌 국가로 규정한다. 국가는 전쟁의 피해자인 민간인에게 어떤 형태의 사과나 배상도 하지 않는데 이러한 현실에 대해 구보 씨는 전쟁의 책임 국가들을 향한 분노를 표한다. 본고는 영화비평을 통해 전쟁과 민간인 학살의 현재성과 전 세계적 동시성을 밝히는 구보 씨의 시각이 독창적임을 주장하고 구보 씨의 세계시민주의와 망명자로서의 정체성이 국가주의를 비판했다고 주장한다.

영어초록

This paper sheds light on Mr. Gubo’s world of consciousness from a new perspective by analyzing the movie reviews performed by Mr. Gubo in A Day of Mr. Gubo a Novelist (1970-1972). If the previous studies analyzing the intertextual aspects of Choi In-hoon’s novels were studies that revealed the related aspects between Choi In-hoon’s novel and another literature text in this text, this paper attempts to analyze of the films in Choi In-hoon’s novel in terms of expanding intertextuality. This paper analyzes Japanese film Shoot That Flag (1944) and American film Soldier Blue (1970) that appear in Choi In-hoon’s novel A Day of Mr. Gubo a Novelist. Mr. Gubo remembers Shoot That Flag, which is actually based on the Asia-Pacific War, as a film about the Anglo-Boer War in Africa. It is an intentional act by the author not only to expose Africa as a representative victim of imperialism and colonialism but also to expand the scope of the colonized experience from Asia to Africa. Although Soldier Blue is based on the 1864 Sand Creek massacre of Native Americans, Mr. Gubo realizes that it is an allegory to the “My Lai Massacre” in Vietnam War which was happening at that time. When he associates two massacres, he finds presentness of the film. Shoot That Flag and Soldier Blue are set in different wars, but Mr. Gubo pays attention to the common massacre of civilians in both films. Mr. Gubo recognizes that the massacre of civilians during war is an event that reveals human savagery and madness, and at the same time clearly points out that the responsible agent of the massacre is the country that put combatants into the battlefield. Mr. Gubo is angry at the fact that the country does not apologize to civilians who are victims of the war, and his anger is directed not only to Japan, the perpetrator of the Asia-Pacific War, but also to other countries that dominated the Korean Peninsula, the Americas and Africa. This paper argues that Mr. Gubo’s perspective of the present and global simultaneity of war and civilian massacres through movie reviews is original, and argues that his self-awareness as a global citizen and an exile criticizes nationalism.
