This study examines the traditional fairy tale, “Cinderella,” and its various parody versions to consider the stereotyped gender roles and class matter. With the identification of the roles of fairy tales in the male-ordered society, lots of women critics and writers have modified some aspects of the traditional fairy tales and produced parody versions.
In the traditional fairy tale, “Cinderella,” the title character was a passive and sensitive ash girl. Her success was achieved through the fairy godmother’s help with beautiful dresses, a pumpkin coach, and glass slippers. Prince Cinders shows the reversed roles of male and female characters. Cinder Edna represents a very active female character. In Ella Enchanted, ‘obedience’ is revealed not as a blessing, but as a curse. Cinder in Cinder is the most subversive parody version of Cinderella.
Glass Slippers, the gifts from magic power, operate as a tool for rags-to-riches. Willingly to be a product in marriage market, young women in the ball wanted their feet to fit the glass slippers in spite of the potential danger of cutting their toes or heels while bleeding. Loafers Edna puts on in the ball are just for her satisfaction, not for being presented. Unlike the other Cinderella characters, Cinder, who is a cyborg, has no desire to be a royal family or princess, and also no foot to put on glass slippers. The fact Cinder has no foot means she existed outside of marriage market. Instead of being chosen by the prince, she can choose the prince by herself. Not as a product chosen by male, but as a warrior to fight with the evil power, Cinder who has a steel foot can be the most radical rebellious Cinderella.
