초록

‘새끼 서 발’ 설화는 함경도부터 경상도까지 광범위한 지역에서 100여 년이 넘는 오랜 기간 다양한 사람들이 향유해 온 이야기다. 이는 주인공이 가진 보잘것없는 성취물(새끼 서 발/조이삭 하나)을 가지고 길을 떠나 결국 ‘처녀/비지’를 얻어 돌아오는, 성장에 관한 서사다. 주인공은 애초에 어떤 의도를 지니고 있었던 것이 아니지만, 타인과 만나 그들의 요청에 따라 단순히 자신이 갖고 있던 물건을 내어주는데, 이때 주인공은 타인에게 자신이 지닌 것의 가치를 인정받으며 자신과 연결된 타인의 존재를 인식하게 된다. 유형에 따라 주인공의 의도적 교환 과정이 단계적으로 나타나는데, 이때 주인공은 생명과 삶에 대한 사람들의 인정, 지지를 확인하며 그 역시 죽음과 다를 바 없는 퇴행적 상태에서 생동하는 삶으로 나아가는 원동력을 얻게 된다.
사건이 연쇄, 누적되는 형식담의 외피는 이야기를 전승하고, 향유하는 사람들이 지향하는 가치를 온전히 전하기 위한 장치이기도 하다. 하나의 화소가 다른 화소와 긴밀하게 연결되는 이 누적 연쇄담 형식은 주인공이 만나는 대상 하나 하나가 모두 연결되어 있으며, 이 연결망이 주인공의 변화에 깊숙이 관여하고 있음을 드러내는 장치다. 이는 이야기 내부에서 주인공의 변화와 성장을 추동하는 기제이기도 하면서 서사의 바깥, 즉 향유 계층이 지향하는 가치를 반복해 체화하는 장치이기도 하다. 이야기를 공유자산이라고 볼 때, 향유자들은 ‘새끼 서 발’이라는 공유재를 통해 자신과 연결된 타인의 존재, 타인이 가진 것, 타인의 성취, 그리고 살아 있음의 절대적인 가치를 온전히 인정하는 과정을 체화하게 되는 것으로 보인다.
‘새끼 서 발’ 설화는, 가진 것 없고 뚜렷한 목적도 의지도 없던 주인공이 집 밖으로 나가 누군가를 계속해 만남으로써 자립할 수 있는 어른이 되어가는 성장 서사로 읽을 수 있다. 생명 회복의 당위성과 함께 이야기가 말하고자 하는 중요한 목표가 경험을 통한 성취와 성장인 것이다. 방 안에 스스로 갇혀 먹고 배설하는 일밖에 하지 않던, 온전히 살아 있는 상태라 볼 수 없었던 주인공이 집(방) 밖으로 나가 여러 사람들과 만남 끝에 결국 고유한 자기 세계를 구축하고 성장해가는 과정을 향유자들은 ‘새끼 서 발’ 설화를 통해 적극적으로 형상화하며 지지해온 것으로 보인다.

The stories of “six yard[seo-bal] straw rope” has been enjoyed by various people for more than 100 years in a wide range of areas from Hamgyeong to Gyeongsang Province. This is a narrative about growth, leaving the road with the humble accomplishments(six yard[seo-bal] straw rope/a single rice stem) of the protagonist and eventually returning with a ‘bridesmaid/ bean-curd dregs’. The main character did not have any intention in the first place, but he met with others and simply gave out his own things at their request. At this time, the main character recognized the value of his own and recognized the existence of others connected with him. The main character's intentional exchange process is gradually shown according to the type, and the main character confirms the recognition and support of people about life, and he also gets the driving force to move from a degenerative state that is no different from death to a lively life.
The outer cover of the series of events and the accumulated formal stories is also a device to fully convey the values ​​that the tradition and enjoyers aim for. This cumulative chain story format, in which one pixel is closely connected to another pixel, reveals that each object to which the main character meets is connected, and that this network is deeply involved in the change of the main character. This is also a mechanism that drives the change and growth of the protagonist in the story, and it is also a device that repeats the value of the outside of the narrative, that is, the enjoyment class. When the story is considered as a shared asset, it seems that the enjoyers embody the way of fully recognizing the existence of others connected to them, what others have, the achievement of others, and the absolute value of being alive through the common property called ‘six yard[seo-bal] straw rope’.
The story of the six yard[seo-bal] straw rope can be read as a growth narrative in which the main character, who has nothing and has no clear purpose or will, goes out of the house and continues to meet someone to become an adult who can become independent. The important goal of the story, along with the necessity of life recovery, is achievement and growth through experience. The main character, who was confined to the room and was not seen as a fully alive state, who was confined to eating and excreting himself, seems to have actively shaped and supported the process of building and growing his own world after meeting with many people through the story of ‘six yard[seo-bal] straw rope’.
