퇴계 철학에 나타난 自然發의 의미 (The meaning of natural manifestation in Toegye philosophy)

초록

이 논문은 퇴계철학의 핵심 용어 중 하나인 性發의 의미를 自然發의 개념을 통해 고찰하는데 있다. 性發은 퇴계철학이 주자철학과 구분되는 가장 큰 요소이자 동시에 주자 연구자들에게 공격받는 원인이기도 하다. 하지만 스스로 주자의 전인임을 자처한 퇴계가 의도적으로 주자를 배척하는 주장을 펼쳤다고 보는 것은 지나친 억측이다. 그렇기 때문에 퇴계철학의 理發과 性發의 개념은 어디까지나 주자철학에 대한 퇴계의 재해석의 형태로 받아들여야 한다. 性發의 性은 도덕적 본성이며 發은 그것의 작용이다. 發에는 生의 의미가 내재되어 있는데 도덕적 본성에 있어서 그 대상은 도덕정감이 된다. 發을 통해 나타난 도덕정감은 도덕적 본성과의 연속성이 전제될 때만 비로소 존재 할 수 있다. 이 때문에 生은 양적인 증가를 필요로 하는 낳음의 의미가 아닌 流出의 의미로 파악되어야 한다. 연속성과 유출은 쉼 없는 생명력(生生)을 전제로 하고 있으며 이는 우주론적 본체인 태극에서 그 형태를 찾을 수 있다. 퇴계의 性發은 우주론적 본체를 인성론적 본체인 도덕적 본성에 적용시킨 결과로서 이것을 통해 그는 도덕적 본성을 어떠한 억제도 가하지 않고 자연스럽게 작용하도록 둔다면 그것이 가진 활동성에 의해 도덕정감의 발현으로 이어지는 것을 말하려 한 것으로 보인다. 퇴계의 이런 관점은 맹자가 제기한 도덕적 본성과 直出로서의 도덕정감을 성리학적 체계위에서 再解釋한 것이다. 특히 도덕적 본성과 기질적 요소 사이의 자연스러운 합일을 自然發로 정의한 것은 도덕적 본성과 기질을 모두 인정하면서도 이들의 관계를 명확히 구분하지 못했던 맹자의 한계를 극복했을 뿐만 아니라 도덕정감이 발생할 수 있는 구체적인 실천 방안을 제시한 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

This paper aims to consider the meaning of original manifestation which is one of key words of Toegye’s Philosophy through the concept of natural manifestation. Original manifestation is the biggest element that enables Toegye Philosophy to be distinguished from Zhuxi’s Philosophy and the reason for it is attacked by the researchers of Zhuxi as well. But it is the excessive conjecture to view that Toegye who called himself as the predecessor of Zhuxi insisted on the exclusion of Zhuxi intentionally. So, the concepts of reasonable manifestation and original manifestation from Toegye’s Philosophy should be accepted merely as the type of reinterpretation by Toegye about Zhuxi’s Philosophy. The origin is the moral nature and the manifestation is the action of that out of original manifestation. The meaning of life is contained in the manifestation, however, its object becomes moral sentiment regarding the moral nature. Moral sentiment that is shown through the manifestation can exist only when the continuity with moral nature is the prerequisite. Due to that, the life should be grasped as the meaning of the outflow not the meaning of birth that requires the quantitative increase. The continuity and outflow are required for the vitality and it means that its shape can be found from Taegeuk that is the cosmological body. The original manifestation of Toegye seems like he tries to tell moral sentiment is revealed by the activity it has if let moral nature act naturally through that without loading any suppression as the results of applying the cosmological body to moral nature that is the body of treatise of human nature. Such viewpoint of Toegye is the reinterpretation of moral nature that Mencius suggested and moral sentiment as the direct output based on the system of Neo-Confucianism. Especially, defining the natural unity between moral nature and organic factor as natural manifestation seems to suggest the practical measures in detail that moral sentiment can be generated as well as overcomes the limitation of Mencius who could not clarify the relation of them though it admits both the moral nature and temperament.
