    초록

This study reviewed the farming management of Gyeongsangdo Danseong Kim In-seop family from the late 19th century to the 1930s. Kim In-seop family had been a predominant clan in Danseong, but the family's fortune declined from the late 18th century. Then, in the mid to late 19th century, the family was able to acquire the status of a small and medium sized landlord and by 1936 the family's dry and paddy fields amounted to around 700 majigis, with 1 majigi being approximately 150 pyeong.
In the previous study, this writer reviewed Kim In-seop family's growth into a small and medium sized landlord and the management of family farm land. However, Kim In-seop family focused on the 50-50 sharecropping farming system, like other landlords at that time. Many case studies have been accumulated on this type of land management. This study is also one of the case studies. What differentiates this study from others, however, is the social perspective toward land management of landlords, departing from the economic perspective. Thus, the focus is on the status and role of Kim In-seop family in the country village and relations with tenants. The result of the study showed that Kim In-seop family's management of sharecropping land was characterized by low land rent, bearing 1/2 of seed cost and land tax and collection of 1/3 of rice straw.
Kim In-seop family maintained its foundation as a landlord in the 1930s and after the liberation of the nation, despite drastic political and social changes. This can be attributable to the fact that the family managed its farm land based upon the time-honored landlord system, not upon colonial-style or capitalistic landlord systems. In other words, the family's farm land management was not a means of wealth accumulation, but rather, characterized by a humane and lenient manner, which helped preserve the standing and class of the family in the country village.
