臺山의 反擬古論이 지닌 經學的 성격 －考證學에 대한 朱子學的 대응을 중심으로－ (Feature as the study of Confucian classics in Daesan's objection to ancient style)

초록

대산의 경우, 當代 문장을 중시한 논의는 특히 주자학적 입장에서 고증학에 대한 대응 논리라는 경학적 성격과 연결된다. 조선시대 문인들의 경우 그 문학론이 경학적 사유의 기반위에 형성되는 것이 보편적이라 할 수 있지만, 경학 논리와 문학 논리가 대산처럼 단단하게 연결되어 있는 경우는 실제로 흔하지 않다. 특히 대산의 경우는 고증학에 대한 대응논리와 그로부터 촉발한 산문론은 19세기 문학과 학문에서 눈여겨볼 만한 지점이고, 좁게는 주자학자의 자기 고민 내지 사고의 확장과 관련해서도 짚어볼 점이 없지 않다고 판단된다.
대산은 고문을 표방하는 사람들이 古文의 문장만을 흉내 내어 예스러움을 가장하는 행태를 비판했다. 하지만 결코 고문 학습을 경시하거나 반대하지 않았고, 오히려 당송 문장을 제대로 배우기 위해서는 먼저 선진 고문을 깊이 체득할 것을 권하였다. 이는 문장이 시대에 따라 변화하고 발전하였다는 철저한 문변 의식 위에 형성되었다고 할 수 있다. 대산이 주장하는 논리의 흐름을 따라가면, 종당에는 당송 고문 역시 오늘날의 문장을 구사하기 위한 筌蹄에 불과하다는 결론이 도출된다.
이런 대산의 사유와 문론은 고증학에 대한 대응 논리에서 촉발된 경학적 성격이 짙다. 고증학자들은 漢代의 訓詁를 존중하며 주자학에 날선 공격을 가하여, 주자학은 유학이 아니라 불교의 논리라고까지 몰아부쳤다. 그러나 대산의 생각은 조금 달랐다. 학문이란 것도 결국 시대를 따라 변화·발전하는 것이고, 주자학은 불교와 노장의 개념어들을 빌려와 철학적 논변과 이론을 통해 유학을 발전시켰다고 본 것이다. 그리고 주자학이야말로 공자 이래 유가의 숙원이던 이단의 배척과 유가 정신의 확립에 기여하였으며, 그 기여와 공로를 글자 몇 개의 존재 여부로 모두 부정할 수는 없다는 주장이다. 결국 고증학에서 대산이 비판한 부분은 도식적이고 형식주의적인 주자학 배격에 있다. 그리고 주자학의 기여와 성취까지 무시하려는 이면에 도사리고 있는 숨은 의도, 곧 주자학을 비판함으로써 자신의 학문적 권위를 획득하려는 순수하지 못한 학문적 태도를 문제삼았다. 그렇기 때문에 주자학 연구에 있어 고증학의 우수한 방법론은 수용하는 열린 자세를 보였고, 나아가 문장 창작에 있어 佛家와 外家書는 물론 어떠한 말도 모두 가져다 쓸 수 있다는 논리로 이어졌다. 이 생각이 반의고와 당대 문장을 강조하는 대산 문론의 기반으로 작용하였다.

영어초록

Daesan's discussion which put stress on sentence of the day(當代文章) is connected feature as the study of Confucian classics(經學), which is response to the study of ancient documents documental archaeology, especially in the view of the doctrines of Chu-tzu. In Chosun dynasty, it was universal that literary theory was formed on the base of the study of confucian classics. But actually the case of which literary logic and study of confucian classics' logic are connected closely was not common like Daesan. Especially, in the 19C's literature and study, Daesan's theory of prose which is set off from response to the study of ancient documents documental archaeology(考證學) is the important point. And in a narrow sense, there are important points in regard to his own anguish and extension of thinking.
Daesan criticized attitude that the scholars who claim to ancient sentences imitate only sentences and pretend antique style. But he didn't downplay or oppose studying ancient sentences, preferably he advised to learn former ancient sentences deeply to learn sentences of Tang and Sung (唐宋). This was formed on the sense that sentences are changed and advanced according to the times. According to the flow of Daesan's logics, the conclusion is drawn that Tang and Sung (唐宋)'s ancient sentences are merely premise.
These Daesan's thinking and the literary theory are derived from the feature as the study of confucian classics, which is response to the study of ancient documents, documental archaeology. The archaeological scholars respected exegetics of Han dynasty, so attacked the doctrines of Chu-tzu strongly. So, what was worse, they claim that the doctrines of Chu-tzu is not confucianism but Buddhism's logic. But Daesan's thought was different. He thought that study is changed and advanced according to the times, so the doctrines of Chu-tzu developed confucianism by borrowing concept words from Buddhism and Laozi·Chuangzi philosophy, doing philosophical arguments and studying theory. And he insisted that the doctrines of Chu-tzu contributed to establishing confucianism's mind and excluding cult, that is the long-cherished wish since Confucius. He insisted that all these contributions and services can't be denied on the basis of only several sentences. Eventually, his criticism to the study of ancient documents, documental archaeology is rejection to schematic and formal doctrines of Chu-tzu. And he raised questions about impure academic attitude which is hidden intention that ignore doctrines of Chu-tzu's contributions and achievements and acquire one's own academic authority. So, in studying the doctrines of Chu-tzu., he showed open mind that accept methodology of study of ancient documents documental archaeology. Going one step forward, in creating literature, this thought was connected to the logic that all the words can be borrowed as well as Buddhism's books or the books above confucianism. This thought acted as the base of Daesan's literal theory that object to ancient style and emphasize on sentence of the day.
