혁명이 실패한 사회에서 살아남기 ― 김수영 후기시에 나타난 반전이의 의미 (Surviving in a Society Where Revolution Failed - The Meaning of Reverse Transition in Kim Soo-young’s Late Poetry)

초록

이 논문은 세 시기로 구분되는 김수영의 문학 중 후기시에 해당하는 부분을 연구 대상 텍스트로 삼았다. 그 시기는 4ㆍ19혁명이 실패로 돌아가고 한국의 정치적 근대의 역량이 무너진 절망의 시기이다. 혁명에 참여하고 혁명의 정신에 동조했던 사람들은 혁명이 성공한 사회에서 혁명이 실패한 사회 사이의 “다리”를 건너야만 했다. 혁명의 의의를 보존하고 계승하는 과업을 안고 이 시기를 통과하는 것이 문학인 김수영의 시대정신이었다. 그는 혁명의 실패를 인식하고, 일차적으로 그 자신이 성공에서 실패로 전회한 사회에 적응하기 위해서, 이차적으로는 그 사회가 혁명이 실패한 사회라는 것을 알리기 위해서 분투한다. 어느 사회이든 개인의 위상이나 사회체제의 변화의 간극에는 그것을 극복하는 명료한 리미널리티의 방법이 존재한다. 이 논문은 이러한 급격한 변화에서 이루어지는 문학적 현상을 이해하기 위해서 “리미너릴티(liminality)”의 관점을 도입하였다. 일반적인 리미널리티의 수행 절차에 따라서 김수영의 시를 분리, 전이, 재통합의 순서로 분석하였다. 이 중에서 일반적인 리미널리티와는 다르게 창조적 변이가 나타나는 부분은 재통합 단계이다. 재통합의 단계에서는 변증법적 해법이 들어설 자리에 반전이의 행위가 나타난다. 이 반전이는 긍정적 전망이 불가능한 혁명이 실패한 사회에서의 절망을 반어적으로 표명한다. 리미널리티 기계는 코뮤니타스의 “생산”을 향해 나아가고 시장르 기계는 창작 주체의 윤리적 정당성을 확보하기 위한 담론을 향해 나아간다. 이 두 기계의 진행은 리미널리티가 예견한 위험 상황이 시적 주체가 담보할 수 있는 윤리적 허용치를 초과했을 때 충돌한다. 이 경우에 리미널리티의 목표를 견지하고 동시에 시의 장르적 문법을 온전히 준수하는 방법은 존재하지 않는다. 다만, 재통합의 단계에서 나타난 반전이는 그러한 사태에 이르게 된 상황을 증언하여 시의 형식 자체에 긴장을 부여한다. 그런 점에서 반전이는 시의 내용에 대한 반어가 아니라 시의 형식에 대한 반어이다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the late period of Kim Soo-young's literature, which is divided into three periods. The period is a time of despair, when the April 19 Revolution failed and South Korea’s capacity for political modernization collapsed. Those who participated in the revolution and sympathized with its spirit had to cross the “bridge” between the society where the revolution succeeded and the society where the revolution failed. To pass through this period with the task of preserving and inheriting the meaning of the revolution was the zeitgeist of the writer Kim Soo-young. He recognizes the failure of the revolution and struggles, firstly, to adapt to the society in which he has gone from success to failure, and secondly, to let people know that it is a society in which the revolution has failed. In any society, there is a clear way of liminality to overcome the gap between changes in the status of the individual and the transformation of the social system. This study adopts the perspective of "liminality" to understand the literary phenomenon of rapid change. This study analyzed Kim Soo-young’s poems in the order of separation, transition, and reintegration, following the general procedures of liminality. Among them, it is the reintegration stage where creative variation appears differently from the general liminality. In the stage of reintegration, an act of reverse transition appears in the place where a dialectical solution will enter. This reverse transition is an ironic expression of despair in a society where revolution failed, so no positive outlook would be possible.
The liminality machine moves toward the “production” of communitas, while the poetry genre machine moves toward the discourse to secure the ethical legitimacy of the creative subject. The progress of these two machines collide when the dangerous situation foreseen by liminality exceeds the ethical tolerance of the poetic subject. In this case, there is no way to uphold the goals of liminality and at the same time fully comply with the grammar of the genre poetry. However, the reverse transition that emerges at the stage of reintegration testifies to the situation that led to such an event, and thus create a tension in the poem’s form itself. In that sense, the reverse transition is not a rebuttal to the content of the poem, but to the form of the poem.
