반공극 <한강은 흐른다>의 창작 동인과 극적 특성 연구 (The Study on the Creative Motives and Dramatic Characteristics of Anti-Communist Play So Flows River Han)

초록

이 논문에서는 <한강은 흐른다>의 창작 동인과 극적 특성을 유치진 연극 활동의 흐름 속에서 살펴보았다. 1957년 6월에 미국 연극 연수를 마치고 귀국한 유치진은 서울에서 지역사회 극장을 운영하는 세계적 반공 극작가를 연극 활동의 목표로 삼았다. 지역사회 극장 건립을 위한 록펠러재단 지원금을 신청하기 위해서는 극단 신협의 재건과 유치진의 능력을 증명해 줄 작품이 필요하였다. 그 과정에서 유치진의 작품 방향이 구체화 되었다. 그것은 지역사회 극장에서 공연 가능한 반공극이면서도 강력한 대중성을 지닌 작품이었다. 그런 점에서 <한강은 흐른다>는 일종의 ‘기획 상품’의 의미를 지닌다.
유치진의 창작에 도움이 된 작품이 우 누(U Nu)의 반공극 <더 피플 윈 스루>이다. 1952년에 미국의 패서디나 플레이하우스(Pasadena Playhouse)에서 공연되었고, 1957년에 작품집으로 출간된 세계적인 유명세를 지닌 반공극이다. <더 피플 윈 스루>는 공산주의 이념의 허구성과 공산주의 반란군의 잔인함이 잘 부각되어 있어서 미국이 원하는 반공극의 모범이었다. <더 피플 윈 스루>는 주동인물(protagonist)과 반동인물(antagonist)의 대결구도가 극히 미약하고, 주동인물 아웅 윈(Aung Win) 외에 여러 인물들의 이야기가 병렬적으로 연결되어 있으며, 막을 구분하지 않고 전체 8장(scene)으로 극이 구성되어 있다. 유치진은 이러한 작품을 ‘탈 입센형’ 연극으로 분류했는데, <한강은 흐른다> 역시 그러한 특징을 고스란히 가지고 있다. 주동인물과 반동인물의 대결구도가 극히 미약하며, 주동인물 정철 외의 여러 극인물들의 이야기가 독립적으로 존재하고 있다. 초연에서는 장소의 변화에 따라 22경(scene)으로 나뉜 극 구성이 장점으로 부각되었으나, 관객에게는 경의 사용이 특별한 의미를 가지지 않는다.
<한강은 흐른다>는 중극장 규모의 아레나(arena) 무대에서 공연하기 위한 작품이므로, 유치진은 단일 극공간 내에 여러 장소를 배치하였다. 유치진은 대사만으로도 정보를 충분히 전달할 수 있는 상황은 실내에서 처리하고, 특별히 강조하여야 할 부분은 극인물들이 무대 전면의 한길로 나오도록 했다. <한강은 흐른다>는 선한 주동인물과 악한 반동인물의 대결이라는 이분법적 설정을 사용했던 이전의 반공극과 다른 특성을 가지고 있다. 유치진은 정철․안희숙 외 여러 인물들의 사연도 충실하게 담아내었으며, 살아남기 위해 몸부림치고 있는 사람들의 모습을 통해 전쟁의 비극성을 관객들이 느낄 수 있게 하였다. 그러한 특성으로 인해 공산주의자들의 잔혹성이 부각될 여지가 적은 작품이 되었다. 미국이 원하는 반공극을 의식한 유치진은 이를 만회하기 위해 기나긴 정철의 대사를 통해 관객에게 직접 공산주의자들의 잔혹성을 전달하였다. 그러나 그러한 시도가 극의 사실성을 파괴하고 있으며, 반공극으로서 완성도를 떨어뜨리고 말았다.

영어초록

In this paper, the creative motives and dramatic characteristics of So Flows River Han were examined in the flow of Yoo Chijin's theatrical activities. Yoo Chijin, who returned home after completing his US theater training in June 1957, aimed to become a world-class anti-communist playwright who runs a community theater in Seoul. In order to apply for the Rockefeller Foundation grant for the construction of a community theater, a work was needed to prove Yoo Chijin's ability. Yoo Chijin made most of the Shinhyup members return from the National Theater to rebuild the theater company Shinhyup. In this process, the direction of Yoo Chijin's work was embodied. It was an Anti-Communist, yet powerfully popular play that could be performed in community theaters. In this regard, So Flows River Han has the meaning as a kind of 'planned product'.
The work that helped Yoo Chijin's creation was U Nu's Anti-Communist play, The People Win Through. It is a world-famous Anti-Communist play that was performed at the Pasadena Playhouse in the United States in 1952 and published as a collection of works in 1957. The People Win Through was an example of the Anti-Communist play that the United States wanted because it highlighted the fiction of communist ideology and the brutality of communist rebels. In this work, the confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist is extremely weak, and the stories of several characters other than the protagonist, Aung Win, are connected in parallel. It consists of eight scenes without distinguishing acts. Yoo Chijin classified these works as a ‘de-Ibsen type’ play, and So Flows River Han also has such characteristics. The confrontation between its protagonist and antagonist is very weak, and the stories of various characters other than the main protagonist Jeong Cheol exist independently, and it is made up of 22 scenes without any distinction. Yoo Chijin divided the 22 scenes according to the change of place, but the division has no special meaning to the audience.
Since So Flows River Han is a work for performing on a medium-sized arena stage, Yoo Chijin placed several places within a single space. Yoo Chijin handled the situation in which information could be sufficiently conveyed with only lines indoors, and the parts that should be emphasized in particular was to have the characters come out on a main road in front of the stage. So Flows River Han has a different characteristic from the previous Anti-Communist play, which used the dichotomous setting of a confrontation between a good protagonist and an evil antagonist. Yoo Chijin faithfully captured the stories of other characters besides Jeong Cheol and Ahn Huisuk and allowed the audience to feel the tragedy of the war through the images of people struggling to survive. Such characteristics weakened the emphasis on the brutality of communism. Yoo Chijin, conscious of the Anti-Communist play that the United States wants, delivered the brutality of the communists directly to the audience through Jeong Cheol's long lines to make up for it. However, such an attempt destroyed the realism of the play and lowered the level of perfection as an Anti-Communist play.
