초록

이 글은 문학 작품의 번역이라는 사건과 결과물을 번역문학사, 기독교출판번역사, 문화사라는 시야 속에서 살피고자 했다. 이를 위해 일상적, 담론적, 종교적 차원에서의 문화번역과 실천이라는 맥락 속에서 번역 문학의 의미를 이해하고자 했다. 또한 3.1운동 직후 문화통치기를 맞이하여 기독교 출판사가 비기독교인도 대상으로 하는 문학번역을 본격화하며 발간한 첫 작품이 갖는 의미를 밝히고자 했다.
헨리 반 다이크의 The Other Wise Man은 1920년 『第四博士』라는 제목으로 조선어로 번역되며 당시 대중적으로 유포되던 크리스마스 문화와 대표적인 크리스마스 번역 문학 속에서 차별적인 메시지를 전달하고 있었다. 이 번역물의 번역 원본과 번역의 정도와 수준을 밝히기 위해 영어 원본과 중국어본을 비교하며 조선어본이 중국어본을 부분적으로 참조하되 영어 원본을 토대로 유려한 조선어 번역으로 완역했음을 확인하였다. 국한문표기법을 채택했지만 이는 의미 전달을 위해 한자를 표기하고 루비를 단 것으로, 가급적 한자어보다는 한글 어휘를 선택하고자 했음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 조선예수교서회의 번역출간물과 번역자 밀러 선교사의 전후 번역 흐름을 살펴보며 1920년대라는 시기의 특수성을 확인하였다. 『제사박사』는 ‘탄생-기쁨-가족-선물/자선’이 주류였던 당대의 성탄 서사와 담론 속에서 ‘죽음-고난-동포-구원’의 서사로서 존재했다. 또한 기독교적 성격이 강한 원작자와 번역자, 출판주체를 통해 창작되고 번역된 이 텍스트는 일제 강점기 조선에 유입되면서 민족해방과 투쟁의 정신을 고양시키는 서사로 개작되며 희곡과 공연으로도 확산되었다.

영어초록

This article attempted to examine the translation of literary works from the perspective of translation history, Christian publishing history, and cultural history. To this end, I tried to clarify the meaning of translated literature in the context of cultural translation and practice at the everyday, discourse, and religious levels on the meaning of Christmas. In addition, it was intended to clarify the meaning of the first work published by a Christian publisher in earnest during the imperial cultural rule immediately after the March 1st Movement.
Henry van Dyke’s The Other Wise Man was translated into Korean titled 『第四博士』 in 1920 and delivered a different message in the Christmas culture in media and representative Christmas translation literature that was popularly distributed at the time. The original English and Chinese versions were compared to reveal the degree and level of translation of this translation, and as a result, it was confirmed that the Korean version partially referenced the Chinese version, but translated it completely into a rich Korean translation based on the original English version. Although the Korean-Chinese notation method was adopted, it was found that Chinese characters were marked and rubies were attached to convey meaning, indicating that they wanted to choose a Korean vocabulary rather than Chinese characters. In addition, it was confirmed the specificity of the times by examining the translation published by the Christian Literature Society and the flow of translation by the translator and missionary, E.H.Miller around the 1920s. The 『第四博士』 existed as the narrative of “death-hardship-liberation/nationalism-save” in the Christmas narratives and discourse of the time when “birth-joy-family-gift/charity” was the mainstream. In addition, the text was created and translated through the original author, translator, and publisher with a strong Christian character, but it was adapted into an narrative that enhances the spirit of national liberation and struggle and spread to plays and performances when it was introduced to Joseon during the Japanese colonial period.
