유치진의 반공극 <나도 인간이 되련다>와 미국 (Yoo Chijin’s an Anti-communist Play, I Am Going to Become a Man and The United States of America)

초록

이 논문에서는 미국 록펠러 아카이브 센터(Rockefeller Archive Center) 및 후버 연구소(Hoover Institution)에서 발굴한 자료를 활용하여 유치진의 반공극 <나도 인간이 되련다>의 특징과 연극사적 의미를 살펴보았다. 『동랑 자서전』에서는 철원에서 공산주의의 모순을 체험하면서 유치진이 반공운동에 매진하기로 결심하였다고 밝혔다. 그러나 미국에서 발굴한 자료들을 통합해 보면, 자유아시아위원회가 시행한 원고 발굴 사업이 반공극 창작의 중요 동인이었음을 명확하게 알 수 있다. 원고 발굴 사업에 채택된 반공극은 영역 출판과 더불어 미국에서 공연 기회도 가질 수 있다는 점이 유치진을 추동하였다.
유치진은 이미 공연되었던 <순동이>와 <통곡>을 번역하여 자유아시아위원회에 제출하고자 했다. 그러나 두 작품은 한국 전쟁을 경험하지 못한 미국 관객을 위한 반공극이 되기는 어려웠다. 소련의 만행을 체험한 내용의 원고를 선호하는 사업 목적에 맞추어 창작한 작품이 <나도 인간이 되련다>이다. 유치진은 극공간을 평양으로 설정하고, 소련 이세 나타아샤 김을 적대자로 등장시켰다. 한국 전쟁에 소련군이 직접 개입하지 않은 탓에 그들의 만행을 작품에서 직접 다루기 어렵게 되자, 유치진이 마련한 대안이었다. 미국의 원고 발굴 사업 목적에 맞추고자 하는 작가 의도가 너무 강하여 창작 방법과 부조화를 불러일으켰고, 그 결과 작품의 완성도는 현저하게 낮아졌다. 그럼에도 불구하고 스튜어트(Stewart)와 조풍연의 도움에 힘입어 <나도 인간이 되련다>는 원고 발굴 사업의 작품으로 채택되었고, 1953년에 진문사에서 자유총서로 출간되었다.
원고 발굴 사업의 성과로 인정받기는 하였으나 영역 작품집 출간 계획은 무산되었다. 유치진은 록펠러재단 연수자로 미국에 머무는 동안 <나도 인간이 되련다>의 영역 작품집 출간을 지속적으로 추진하였다. 그의 바람과 달리 아시아재단과 록펠러재단에서는 작품집 출간에 대한 지원을 거부하였다. 미국에서는 <나도 인간이 되련다>의 작품 수준에 대한 회의감을 가지고 있었는데, 억지로 소련 이세를 등장시킨 무리수를 고려할 때 그러한 판단은 타당하였다.
록펠러재단과 후버 연구소 자료를 통해 <나도 인간이 되련다>의 창작 및 번역 과정을 살펴 본 결과, 『동랑 자서전』에 기록된 반공극에 대한 주장 대부분은 신빙성을 상실하였다. <나도 인간이 되련다>의 창작에는 반공산주의에 대한 신념보다 개인적 욕망이 더 크게 작용하였다. <나도 인간이 되련다>의 창작과 영역 작품집 발간 시도는 유치진이 미국과 관계 설정에서 자기 위치를 정확히 파악하지 못하고 있었다는 사실을 분명히 보여주고 있다.

영어초록

In this paper, the characteristics and historical meaning of Yoo Chijin's anti-communist plays were examined, using materials discovered at the Rockefeller Archive Center and Hoover Institution in the United States. He said that he decided to devote himself to the anti-communist movement while experiencing the contradiction of communism in Cheolwon. However, by integrating the materials discovered in the United States, it can be clearly seen that the Manuscript Program conducted by the Committee for Free Asia was a key driver of his creating anti-communist plays. Yoo Chijin focused on the fact that anti-communist plays adopted in the Manuscript Program will be able to have opportunities to perform in the United States along with the publication of an English translation.
Yoo Chijin wanted to translate Soon Dong Eh (1951) and Tong kok (1952), which had already been performed in Korea, into English and submit them to the Committee for Free Asia. However, while the two works could be recognized as anti-communist plays for Korean audiences, it was difficult to become anti-communist plays for American audiences who did not experience the Korean War. The work created for the business purpose of preferring the manuscript dealing with the atrocities of the Soviet Communists is I Am Going to Become a Man.
Yoo Chijin set the theater space as Pyongyang, and the second generation of the Soviet Union, Natasha Kim, appeared as an antagonist. It was an alternative prepared as a desperate measure when it became difficult to directly deal with the atrocities of the Soviet Communists in the work because the Soviet army did not directly intervene in the Korean War. The author's intention to fit the purpose of the American manuscript program was so strong that it caused discord with the creative methods, and as a result, the completeness of the work was significantly lowered. Nevertheless, with the help of Stuart and Cho Pungyoun, I Am Going to Become a Man was adopted as a work of the manuscript program, and it was published as the Free Series by Jinmoonsa in 1953.
Although it was recognized as the achievement of the manuscript program, the plan to publish a collection of works translated into English was fell through. This is because the committee for Free Asia ended the manuscript program early. Yoo Chijin, convinced that I am going to become a man is an anti-communist play that the U.S. wants, promoted the publication of an English translation while staying in the US as a Rockefeller Foundation's fellowship. Contrary to his wishes, the Asia Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation refused to support the publication of an English translation. In the United States, there was a sense of skepticism about the level of this work, and such a judgment was valid, considering the unreasonable move that forced the second generation of the Soviet Union to appear. Even after returning to Korea after completing the Rockefeller Foundation training, Yoo Chijin did not give up on publishing the English translation of I am going to become a man.
According to a review of the creation and translation process of I am going to become a man through data from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Hoover Institution, most of Yoo Chijin's claims recorded in The Dongrang Autobiography lose credibility. Yoo Chijin's creation of anti-communist plays is not a belief in anti-communism, but a byproduct of an individual’s selfish desire. The creation of I am going to become a man and the attempts to publish the English translation clearly reveal that Yoo Chijin did not grasp his exact position in establishing relations with the United States.
